Time Line of Crucifixion Events

March 28, 2013 by Sandra Peoples 1 Comment

The events leading up to the crucifixion and then resurrection of Christ are fascinating. Recorded in each of the Gospels, these events show the humanness and divinity of our Lord Christ. Read through just some of what happened:

  • And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciplines and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” -Matthew 26:26
  • Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” -Mark 14:32-34
  • Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” -Luke 22:52-53
  • Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews, but now My kingdom is not from here.” -John 18:36
  • Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted God;  let Him deliver Him now if He will Have him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.'” – Matthew 27:41-43
  • And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. – Mark 15:37
  • Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. -Luke 24:1-3
  • Then, the same day at evening  being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. -John 20:19-20

To help you focus your heart over the next few days, we’ve created an Easter time line, listed the events that changed the world so many years ago. It is simple and plain, so you are able to focus on what’s really important and read the accounts listed in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Don’t miss the opportunity to slow down and let the depth of despair on Friday make the surprise and joy of Sunday even sweeter!

Passover’s Path to the Resurrection

March 26, 2013 by Patti Brown 3 Comments

Passover's Path to the Resurrection - DoNotDepart.com

The Old Testament is replete with prophecies of the coming Messiah… prophecies that Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled. A powerful example of this is the Passover.

Passover's Path to the Resurrection - DoNotDepart.com

Passover – The Back Story

The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for 400 years when God chose Moses to lead them out of captivity. But getting out of Egypt wasn’t going to be easy. Despite God inflicting many plagues on the Epyptians, Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he refused to let the Israelites go.

It was the tenth plague that finally did it. God declared that he would kill every firstborn son if Pharaoh did not change his mind. God provided a special means of protection for His people, the Israelites, from that terrifying tenth plague.

In Exodus 12, God commanded the Israelites in great detail how to mark themselves as His, so that the angel of death would pass over their homes and not kill their firstborn sons. Before this passing over even happened, God also commanded them to observe a memorial Passover feast annually.

Passover Prophecy

In the first Passover, as well as in traditions that have developed in the annual observance of the Passover feast, there is clear prophecy and symbolism foreshadowing the death and resurrection of Christ.

Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

The Israelites were required to choose one unblemished yearling lamb per household. After sacrificing the lamb, they spread its blood on the doorposts and lintel of their homes, signifying a covering of protection from death. Jesus Christ, who was without sin, was the unblemished lamb slain on our behalf. It is His blood on the doorposts of our hearts that provides a covering from eternal death. (Exodus 12:5, Exodus 12:7, Exodus 12:13, 1 Corinthians 5:7, 1 John 1:7)

The lambs’ bones were not to be broken. Nor were Jesus’ bones broken when He was slain (Exodus 12:46, John 19:33).

Passover – The Feast

Jesus Himself celebrated a Passover meal the night before His crucifixion, telling His disciples “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22:15)

And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Luke 22:19-20

Even in the modern Passover Seder meal, celebrated by Jews around the world, there remains symbolism that points to Jesus Christ. If you’d like to explore more, these sites detail the Messianic significance of the Passover Seder:

How the Passover Reveals Jesus Christ from Evidence for God
Messiah in the Passover from Remnant.net
He Who is Coming – the Hidden Afikomen from Hebrew Streams (fascinating discussion of the Messianic meaning behind the still-practiced tradition of hiding a broken matzoh at the Seder meal)
For an engrossing, contemporary look at Passover, read through these letters from a Messianic Jew living in modern day Israel.

Our printable Passover Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus details a few of the ways Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection embodied the ultimate Passover.

New life is in Christ Jesus

Father in heaven, there is nothing I could have done on my own to make my old life pass away.  It’s all because of you that the new has come. Thank you for that you have moved me out of death and into Christ, making me a completely new creation in your eyes. I don’t fully understand it, but I’m so grateful.

By the name of the Christ who brings the new, Amen

Find More Jesus

March 16, 2013 by Katie Orr Leave a Comment

Believe it or not, Easter is right around the corner! I love holidays but, unfortunately, I have found the days that should be most about Jesus (namely Easter and Christmas) are crowded out with many other things — good things like family and good eats — but not Jesus-things.

As a momma, my primary role is to lead my kids to Jesus. I long for my kids to be able to one day say that I gave them ample opportunities to believe in Jesus and that I continued to point them to Him throughout their childhood. If you are a mom, grandma, and/or aunt, I’m sure you share this longing.

If I am not careful, my children will grow up experiencing Easter as a sugar-filled day with fun activities and family dinner; they will get a new dress or pastel tie, a pretty basket, and probably a few cavities.

But no Jesus.

— Find More Jesus

So in my efforts to keep the gospel at the center of our family traditions, I created Find More Jesus: How to Make Easter All About Jesus. This e-guide is an easy — yet incredibly meaningful — Easter plan sure to point your children to real meaning of Easter.

Each day includes:

  • Short daily Bible reading.
  • Corresponding simple egg-activity.
  • Suggested prayer time.
  • Personal focus point for you to chat about with your family.

A supplies list (items you probably already have around the house) and thoughts on the Easter bunny from a Christian worldview are also included.

Hop on over to get your own copy today, and be sure to check out our Facebook page, where the Find More Jesus community will be sharing their Easter celebrations along the way.

My hope is that Find More Jesus will make your Easter season intentionally Christ-centered AND easy.

Katie has made it easy to purposefully share the real message of Easter with our children and grandchildren. This 8-day family devotional guide helps you teach children the foundational truths of the Easter story in a fun format. —Kathy Howard

Touch the dead. I dare you.

March 14, 2013 by Lisa Burgess 17 Comments

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”
John 11:25

I went to my great-uncle’s funeral last month. During the visitation period, I saw his young granddaughter suddenly rush in, touch the casket, then run away.

Her mom immediately demanded an explanation. The daughter replied she had been dared to do it. Her cousins challenged and she accepted.

Can we take a dare and touch the dead, too?

Yes, if we’ve been touched by Jesus first. Because when Jesus touches the dead, the dead come to life. Only the living can touch the dead.

During these remaining weeks leading to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter morning, may we who’ve been brought back to life commit to touching others who haven’t been. While we can’t wake the dead—only God can do that—we can love them in ways that attract them to Jesus.

How? What can the living do that the dead cannot? How can those resurrected into light shine brightest to those in the darkness?

Here are six ways you can touch the dead.

1. Tell of your own resurrection
Only those who’ve died to self and now live in Christ can witness to what that feels like. New life is great news. The best news. Be a living testimony to Jesus’s resurrection by telling of your own (Romans 8:11).

2. Give grace generously
Grace is not natural. The only way to give it abundantly is if you’ve received it abundantly (John 1:16). As a child of God, you have (1 Peter 4:10). Wake up to your reality and bestow it on those who’ve not seen it. May it inspire them to seek its Source.

3. Forgive as you’ve been forgiven
Being born again gave you a fresh start. Your sins, debts, offenses against God were totally forgiven. If you likewise forgive others the debts they owe you (Matthew 6:12), you witness to a living power greater than yourself (Ephesians 4:32). Who doesn’t want to be forgiven?

4. Love in unexplainable ways
You’ve been loved back to life; now let it overflow onto others. Demonstrate the love of God that is more penetrating, more abundant, more lasting than anything you could conjure up on your own (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

5. Be last in a “me-first” world
If you put others before yourself (Philippians 2:3-4), they’ll know something is different inside you. Only those who’ve experienced death and then life anew can consistently be selfless in a self-centered world. Put those around you first to point to Jesus’s humility and ultimate exaltation.

6. Treat everyone with respect
The dead aren’t accustomed to being treated well. Show them differently (Romans 12:16). Remind them of their specialness—they are made in God’s image!—by honoring them as such.

There are plenty of walking dead around us. What they need—and we all need—are more Spirit-revived people who breathe life everywhere they go, reflecting the heartbeat of Jesus. Let’s live like the resurrected people we are.

Touch the dead today.
You’ve been brought back to life to do it.
I double-dog dare you.

We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
1 John 3:14a

What else can the living do that the dead cannot? Do you have a favorite scripture about life? How are you preparing for Easter?

Count Down to Easter with this 21-Day Bible Reading Plan

March 12, 2013 by Kathy Howard 8 Comments

Crucifixion, Jesus on Cross

Easter was always God’s Plan A. Jesus coming to earth, dying, and climbing out of the tomb was not the back-up plan after God’s other efforts to save the world fell through.

For you know that is was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you by your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 1 Peter 1:18-20, NIV

Crucifixion, Jesus on Cross

Just imagine the conversation the Trinity had before God created the world:

We know mankind will reject us and choose their way.

Yes, and death will be the result.

But we will provide a way of forgiveness, salvation, and restoration.

We will Ourself provide a perfect sacrifice.

Everything in God’s Word points us to Christ and His provision for us. From Genesis to Revelation we read God’s story of redemption. Everywhere we look we see shadows and pictures of our Redeemer. From God’s covenant with Abraham and Passover to the Tabernacle and the Sacrificial system everything is a picture of Christ’s work.

I invite you to spend the next 21 days immersing yourself in the biblical story of redemption. Download and print the Bible reading plan. The selected readings start in Genesis and continue through Jesus’ ascension. The one-page plan also includes questions for reflection and application. (If you start today, you will read about the resurrection on Easter Sunday, then you will have a couple more days of reading.)

Let’s not wait to Good Friday to start thinking about God’s provision for us through Christ.

What is your favorite picture or shadow of Christ in the Old Testament?
