What a month.

This month we’ve read through 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John together and studied different aspects of these parts of the Bible.

Truth and love go together. And both help us grow in our walk of faith.

This month:

  • Ali compiled amazing verses about truth and love from 1 John 2.
  • Lindsey’s study on 1 John 3 showed how God’s love is our example of walking in truth and love.
  • Lisa pinpointed how we can know our love is truthful and from God by studying 1 John 4.
  • Kelli looked at 1 John 5 and how living a life of love includes loving God’s children.
  • I studied 2 John and noted at how John discusses God’s love is truth and God’s truth is love.
  • Patti wrapped up the month for us with a post on 3 John how walking in truth means love in action (and that means actively living with love).

Thank you, as always, for joining us.

Walking in Truth Means Love in Action

March 29, 2017 by Patti Brown Leave a Comment

Walking in truth means actively loving and serving the people God has put in your life!

Walking in truth means actively loving and serving the people God has put in your life!
We are wrapping up our study of the letters of John today with 3 John—prepare for action!

John’s theme of truth and love continues strongly in his final letter. 3 John is addressed to Gaius, presumably a man of some influence in a local church, but as the name was common, scholars have not definitively identified him.

It is fitting that John begins his letter both by saying he loves Gaius in truth (the themes of love and truth intertwined again!), and that he prays that Gaius is physically as well as spiritually well. John connects the external and the internal throughout this message.

Walking Means Action

The Greek word for “walk” used in 3 John 1:3 is περιπατέω (peripateó) which is a combination of the words perí (around) and patéō (walk). This combination, and its metaphorical use, equates walking with how one conducts oneself in life.

Walking is not a passive act, friends. You do not walk by thinking about walking. You get up and you do it!

Why Truth and Love Are Intertwined

If someone asked you what “love” is, would it be easy for you to answer? Believe it or not your definition of love depends greatly on the culture in which you live. From a secular American worldview, love is a feeling of butterflies and happiness when you are around someone special. But from a Christian worldview, love is not a feeling, it is a choice lived out in action.

In order to love in Jesus’ way, we have to understand His true definition of love. When we look at the truth given to us in Scripture, and modeled by Him in His earthly ministry, it is clear that love means serving.

Walking in Truth and Love

John commends Gaius for the actions he has taken to love the brethren—welcoming those who visit, supporting them, providing for their needs. John himself wanted to show his love by physically coming to see Gaius.

Our journey through life as followers of Jesus is an active one. Jesus is not pulling us in a wagon! We have to walk.

You choose – will you just say you love Jesus, or will you get up and actually follow Him in truth and love by serving the people He puts in your life today?

For Further Study:

  1. Read 3 John and list all the ways John tells you to be actively pursuing love and truth.
  2. What does John 17:17 tell you about the Word?
  3. What does Matthew 22:36-40 tell you about love?
  4. How can your answers to questions 2 and 3 help you walk in truth and love?
  5. Ask God to show you those whom He wishes you to love in action this week. Write in detail how you will, with His help, pursue serving each person.
Our journey through life as followers of Jesus is an active one. Walk in #TruthAndLove

In Truth and Love {2 John}

March 24, 2017 by Caroline Leave a Comment

"As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love." - 2 John 1:6

Second John gets right to it, right away in verse 1.

“…whom I love in the truth…”

Love and Truth go together from the start.

2 John was written to encourage those in the faith to continue seeking and sharing truth (and to be weary of those sharing falsities). What strikes me every time I read it is how much truth and love are both found and needed when walking with God.

God’s Love is Truth

The apostle John used the word “truth” at least thirty-seven times in his letters (source). In 2 John alone, we see the word “truth” five times (in just thirteen verses).

Guess what else? In 2 John alone, we see the word “love” five times.

Love and Truth. Truth and Love.

Another interesting aspect is that love is always accompanied by obedience.

When we love, we follow God’s commands.

When we love, we obey His laws (and see and give joy; Psalm 1:2, 2 John 1:4).

When we love, we see and follow and walk in truth.

"As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love." - 2 John 1:6

God’s Truth is Love

2 John 1:6 says:

“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.”

We already know that God’s commands are truth (Psalm 119:151). So if we walk in those commands? We walk in truth.

But then 2 John 1:6 goes on to say more about that walking in truth:

“As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.”

What is His command? To walk in love.

Then John even tells us why he writes this: there are false teachers out there. There are people who are not seeking truth and love, yet try to sway others to their views anyway.

So we have to be cautious. We have to have wisdom. We have to seek truth and love.

Thankfully, we have help in our fellow believers, our fellow truth-seekers, our fellow love-walkers, and in God’s Word and love.

Extra Bible Study This Week

  1. Read through 1 John 4, and then read 2 John again. What strikes you most about truth and love?
  2. Read through a commentary on 2 John. (There are many great physical book commentaries out there, and here’s an online version.) What historical cultural information helps you understand John’s writing?
  3. Pray for truth and love in abundance. How can you spread joy through truth and love this week?

Love the Children of God

March 21, 2017 by Kelli LaFram Leave a Comment

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:1-5, NKJV)

Here is an awesome truth about love: love for God leads to love for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let me say that another way. If we love God, then we will love our Christian family.

This is stated several times in 1 John. There is no denying that we are expected to love God’s children.

  • He who loves his brother abides in the light. (1 John 2:10a)
  • For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. (1 John 3:11)
  • We know that we have passed from death to live, because we love the brethren. (1 John 3:14a)
  • By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (1 John 3:16)
  • My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:18)
  • Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. (1 John 4:7)
  • Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:11)

And if those seven verse didn’t make it clear, this one should:

And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. (1 John 4:21)

We must love. Must. Period.

But here’s the thing, loving others doesn’t always come naturally. Why? Because our natural state, apart from Christ, is bent toward selfish sin, not selfless love. On our own, left to our efforts and will, we can not love our spiritual siblings the way we are expected to.

Take a minute and read Romans 7:13-25. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

What did you notice? Did you notice the repeated use the of the pronoun I? I… I… I… Paul made it clear that on his own he could not do what he knew was right. Neither can we. We can not love the way we know we should. At least not on our own. Not until we do one very specific thing — Believe that Jesus is the Christ (1 John 5:1).

When we put our faith in Christ we become overcomers. We have victory over this world and our sinful nature. We are enabled to love, not just in word and tongue, but in deed and in truth. No, we won’t love perfectly. We are still being sanctified, but we can begin to practice righteousness and trust that the Lord will a grow a love for His people deep inside each of us.

Take it further:

  • Read 1 John 4:20 – 5:21.
  • Handwrite 1 John 5:1-5. What, if anything, do you believe the Spirit is trying to convey to you personally?
  • Consider how you show love for God’s people. Do these verses lead you to confess anything in prayer?
  • Study the original Greek for the words believe and Christ in 1 John 5:1. What do you notice?
  • What is one practical way that you can love a brother or sister today? Spend sometime in prayer seeking direction.

If we love God, then we will love our Christian family. #TruthandLove

Is Your Love from God?

March 16, 2017 by Lisa Burgess 22 Comments

as-God-is-are-we-1-john-4

We want to love others with the love that God gives us.

But how can we know if we truly are doing it?

as-God-is-are-we-1-john-4

We’re seeking answers about truth and love this month through the writings of the apostle John in his letters of 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John.

Today we look at 1 John 4, a full and rich chapter on God’s love. Take a minute and read it here now.

If you ever doubt that you’re walking in both truth and love, let John’s words erase your doubts.

Here’s how we can know our love is truly from God:

  • If you believe Jesus is from God, you are from God (1 John 4:2).
  • Since you are from God, His Spirit in you is stronger than anything (1 John 4:4).
  • His Spirit in you is how you know you’re living deeply in God (1 John 4:13).
  • By living in God, you are living in love (1 John 4:16).

And that is the truth.

Jesus is love’s proof alive in us. He keeps us joined with truth because He is truth (John 14:6). His truth in us connects with His truth in others (1 John 4:6), denying any alliance with a spirit of deception.

We can fully rely on the eternal great truth that God is love (1 John 4:8).

And as God is, so also are we (1 John 4:17).

How to know if your love is from God. #LoveAndTruth

For further study:

  1. Read 1 John 4 and think about the following questions.
  2. What is the connection between God’s love for you and your love for others?
  3. How do you see God’s nature manifest in you?
  4. When do you most accurately reflect the image of God?

What does this truth mean to you: “God is love”? Please share in the comments.

What Love Is And What Love Isn’t – A Comparison from 1 John 3

March 14, 2017 by Lindsey 2 Comments

What Love Is and What Love Isn't - A comparison from 1 John 3

Parenting, more than anything else, has enabled me to see my weaknesses.

A few weeks ago, my youngest son was pestering his big brother. My oldest child asked him to quit and then, when his request went ignored, said in a voice that sounded A LOT like me, “What did I just say?” The moment the words left his mouth, I saw myself asking the same question to my son earlier that morning.

Have you ever seen this in your family? Have you ever witnessed your children doing something you know they learned from you?

Our kids become like us, for better or for worse.

Just as our kids often become like us, we can become like our Abba Father.

1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (NIV)

We are children of the Living God! That’s an amazing thing to think about. The God who made the heavens and the earth calls us his children. The God who keeps our world in orbit loves us just as much – more, in fact – than we love our earthly children.

And what a privilege it is to try to be like Him!

So what does that look like? How should a child of God behave if he or she wants to be like Him?

More than anything else, it looks like love.

1 John 3 paints a clear picture of what our love should look like. It does this by providing two examples: one positive example of what TO DO and one negative example of what NOT TO DO.

What Love Is and What Love Isn't - A comparison from 1 John 3

What Love Is:

Verse 1 (quoted above) says that God has lavished His love on us by calling us His children.

The positive example of love that we are to follow is God’s  love for us.

Look at verses 16-18 in the NIV:

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Love is action. It’s laying aside our desires for the needs and desires of another person. It’s noticing the needs of those around us and then helping to meet those needs.

What Love Isn’t:

Along with providing a positive example of what love is, this chapter also provides a negative example of what love isn’t.

Verse 12 reads, “Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.”

Then, to make sure we don’t assume this could never be referring to us because we have never murdered anyone, John adds in verse 15, “Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer.” (NIV)

Loving like our Father means NOT hating another person. It means forgiving them when they hurt us. It means letting go of bitterness and anger.

If we want to love like our Father, we can’t also hate a brother or sister.

The two cannot coincide. “Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister” (1 John 3:10).

The best way to know if you are being like your Abba Father is by looking at your love.

Do you love like He did, sacrificially giving of your time and resources to others? Do you slow down enough to notice the needs of those around you and then seek to meet those needs?

Or, are you so busy you don’t even notice…so strapped for money you can’t give…and so bitter over past hurts you can’t move forward?

Do you want to know if you look like your Father in Heaven? Then look at your love.

For Extra Study This Week:

  1. Read the entire chapter of 1 John 3. As you read, underline the word “love” every time you see it.
  2. Read James 2:14-17. How are these verses similar to 1 John 3 (specifically verse 18)?
  3. What are some specific ways you can love like your Father this week? Write down at least five ideas.

13 Facts about Truth and Love from 1 John 2

March 9, 2017 by Ali Shaw Leave a Comment

13 Facts about Truth and Love from 1 John 2. Read more at DoNotDepart.com #TruthAndLove

This month we’re diving into the Letters of John.  In the intro post for this series, Caroline reminded us that truth and love both stem from God. And that’s precisely because He is truth and love!

Like Caroline said, when we show both of those Christlike attributes, it’s because it overflows…

“from fellowship with God (1 John 1:6-7).

Fellowship with God means we seek, follow, and share truth.

Fellowship with God means we see, hear, and share love.”

But what are truth and love? I found 13 facts that explain truth and love tucked away in 1 John 2.

13 Facts about Truth and Love from 1 John 2. Read more at DoNotDepart.com #TruthAndLove

Truth

What exactly is truth? The world tells us it’s relative. So, in a world where truth has become distorted and muddied, it’s hard to know true truth anymore. But God’s word is a lamp that guides us to the very Truth Himself. (Psalm 119:105, John 14:6)

1 John 2 tells us the following unshakeable, indestructible truths:

  1. Verse 1:  Jesus is our advocate. (He acts like a lawyer who pleads our righteousness before God. Our righteousness is found in Him.)
  2. Verse 2:  Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. (…The atoning sacrifice that pleases God.)
  3. Verses 3-6:  Our obedience demonstrates our relationship with the Savior. (Works don’t save us, but our obedience is an outward sign of what’s in our hearts.)
  4. Verse 12:  A Christian’s sins are forgiven. (Our sins are no match for the power of Jesus’ blood shed on the cross. See 1 John 1:7-9.)
  5. Verse 13:  We are overcomers. (Jesus gives us the ultimate, eternal victory against Satan and strength to continually combat both the Devil and the flesh.
  6. Verse 21: No lie is of truth. (This is an easy to understand truth that sets the bar high. John tells us that anyone who denies the Son has the spirit of Antichrist.)
  7. Verse 23: Truth acknowledges the Son. (We cannot know God without knowing Jesus.)
  8. Verse 25: Jesus promised us eternal life. (See John 3:16.)

Love

We’ve looked to see how John defines and clarifies truth. What does he tell us about love? Like truth, love has been misshapen and redefined by the world. What was the love that John speaks of and that Christ modeled?

  1. Verse 9-11:  Love is the opposite of hate. (John says those who hate aren’t walking in the light.)
  2. Verse 15:  Love chooses God over the world. (We must never compromise on our love and faithfulness to Him.)
  3. Verse  27: Love abides in Jesus. (He has love, He is love, our love for Him is from Him, and He gives us His love to share with others. See 1 John 4:19)
  4. Verse 28: Love gives confidence. (The love that enables us to abide also grants confidence. Love supersedes fear and emboldens us.)
  5. Verse 28: Love has no shame. (Instead of feeling ashamed, we can come to Him knowing He approves of us because of Jesus in our hearts. See Psalm 34:5 and Hebrews 10:19-22.)

Since we know what truth and love are, how can we show them in our relationships with others and our encounters with the world? Well, we can start by standing strong in truth and reflecting Christlike love and compassion. We can model truth that acknowledges Christ for the Savior He is and doesn’t waver. We can show uncompromising love that chooses to put God first. We can share both His message of salvation and His method of grace.

We can point others to Truth and Love Himself.

What do you see in 1 John 2 that defines truth and love? Share in the comments.

For extra study this week:

  1. Read 1 John 2. What stands out most to you about truth and love?
  2. How does John 15:1-17 expound on 1 John 2:3-6?
  3. Look for the comparison of light and dark in verses 7-11. What do you notice?
  4. Reread verses 15-17. Ask God to reveal any areas where you may be struggling with love for the world. Surrender them to God.
  5. Verses 18-27 tell us about the spirit of the antichrist. How can we recognize this spirit? (v. 22) What is it that this spirit tries to do to Believers? (v. 26) Thank the Lord that you abide in Him and that the truth abides in you!

Walking in Truth and Love {a study on 1, 2, and 3 John}

March 7, 2017 by Caroline 1 Comment

Walking in Truth and Love {A Study on 1, 2, and 3 John at DoNotDepart.com}

Back in 2015, we did a month-long study on 1 John 4, a chapter all about how the why and how of God’s love affects our sharing love with others. (If you want to reread any of those posts, click here to see all the posts from that series.)

This month, we’re going to look at 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John and focus on John’s discussion of truth and love and how those two things both come from God and go together. God is truth. God is love.

What does this mean for us as believers?

How do we handle truth with love?

How do we love regardless yet keep truth evident and foremost?

These are all aspects John writes about in his letters. And all of it stems from fellowship with God (1 John 1:6-7).

Fellowship with God means we seek, follow, and share truth.

Fellowship with God means we see, hear, and share love.

It’s both of these things because God’s love is truth and God’s truth is love.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” – 1 John 1:5

As we will see as we read through 1, 2, and 3 John together, following God’s truth and love includes:

  • obeying God’s commands,
  • loving others, including fellow believers,
  • faith,
  • and seeking truth.

And you know what? We all mess up at this at times (many times). But part of God’s truth and love also offers forgiveness. That beautiful, grace-given forgiveness when we turn back and seek Him and His truth and love.

It’s a walk, and one we might stumble on sometimes because we are imperfect. But, because of His love, we can get up and walk with Him again.

Join us this month as we go through 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John and walk together in God’s truth and love.

Extra Bible Study This Week:

  1. Read through 1 John 1. (And read more, if you have time to!)
  2. If you have access to a study bible, read through the introduction notes at the beginning of 1 John to gain understanding of the cultural situation at the time John wrote this letter. He was encouraging believers to be on the look out for false teachers, and part of doing that involved strengthening their walks with God.
  3. What are ways you can actively walk with God in His truth and love this week? Read through 1 John 1 again and pray about an action that you can implement this week.

What about God’s truth and love astounds you every time you consider it?

Who Is the Holy Spirit – Series Wrap Up

March 2, 2017 by Ali Shaw Leave a Comment

Who is the Holy Spirit? Series wrap up at DoNotDepart.com

We are so glad that you’ve joined us this month as we’ve taken a good look into the person and works of the Holy Spirit. We fully understand that our posts have not been an exhaustive look into the topic, but we hope they’ve whet your appetite for the feast of attributes and functions that the Holy Spirit fulfills. God is truly amazing, and this person of the trinity is such a wonderful gift to us!

  • First, I looked into the Deity of the Holy Spirit , to better lay the foundation of the fact that the Spirit is one person of our triune God. I also discussed the basic attributes of the Holy Spirit and touched briefly on His miraculous feat of forming a baby in Mary’s virgin womb.
  • Lindsey taught us 2 Roles of the Holy Spirit from Romans 8.  We are reminded that we have not only a powerful helper, but also a loving intercessor. “Thanks be to God, who gives us the Holy Spirit as helper and intercessor, we can rest assured that everything we pray is being filtered through the Holy Spirit before the Father.”
  • Lisa showed us that one function of the Holy Spirit is to act as witness. We can know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God loves us exactly as we are, no matter what. The Spirit confirms that we are God’s children. That is a truth that sets us free!
  • Kelli gave us 5 Ways that the Holy Spirit Empowers Us. We can proclaim the gospel boldly, pray when we don’t know how, appreciate the gospel’s mystery, deny our flesh, and abound in hope all because we have been empowered by the Spirit of the Living God. What amazing news!
  • Patti looked into the Holy Spirit’s relationship to the Word of God. Not only was the Spirit involved in bringing us the Bible, but He also helps us to understand it and brings it to mind when we need it. I’m so thankful for a loving God that helps us understand and remember His perfect Word, aren’t you?

Who is the Holy Spirit? Series wrap up at DoNotDepart.com

So thank you for joining us as we looked intently and worshipfully at our Comforter. He is marvelous, isn’t He?

What is your favorite attribute of the Holy Spirit? Tell us in the comments!

The Holy Spirit and the Word

February 28, 2017 by Patti Brown Leave a Comment

The Holy Spirit and the Word

The Holy Spirit and the Word
I was born into a Christian family. We attended church weekly, and we actively served in our faith community. But I did not read the Bible.

Yes, I heard Scripture on Sunday mornings, but personal Bible study was not part of our family (or church) culture. In my late teens I began questioning everything – it all seemed flimsy, and I couldn’t get my footing, so I meandered away looking for solid ground.

In my early twenties I had a conversation that made me stop short. How could I reject the Bible if I hadn’t read it?

I began seriously reading the Word. I can say, without hesitation, that immersing myself in God’s Word has had more impact on my journey of faith than anything else I have done. Between the pages of my Bible I met my sovereign, holy, loving Father. I learned Who He really is. I met Jesus Christ—not the soft, gentle, come-give-me-a-hug man of my Sunday School classes, but a wildly loving radical servant Son Who changed everything.

The transforming impact of my journey with the Word is the heart behind why I am so passionate about writing about it. Without the Holy Spirit, I would not have had the Word to read, nor would I be able to understand it.

God’s Word is Holy Spirit Inspired

Men did not invent Scripture out of their own minds! The Holy Spirit “carried them along”:

”For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21)

Peter explained to his fellow believers that the Holy Spirit spoke through David, prophesying about Judas:

“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.”  (Acts 1:16)

And Paul reminded Timothy (and us) that all Scripture is God breathed:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Greek word for “God-breathed” used in 2 Tim 3:16 is theopneustos (θεόπνευστος). The Greek word for “Spirit” used in 2 Peter 1:21 is Pneumatos (Πνεύματος), and in Acts 1:16 is Pneuma (Πνεῦμα). Can you see the similar root in those three words?

“What makes Scripture powerful, or ‘living and active’, is that the words are God’s very own.” – David Garner

The Holy Spirit Helps Us to Understand Scripture

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit teaches us all things:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things…”  (John 14:26 a)

Through the power of the Holy Spirit we can not only learn, but also understand God’s Word. It is through understanding that we are able to apply God’s truth to our lives:

“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God”  (1 Corinthians 2:12)

The Holy Spirit also convicts us through the Word. The eyes of our hearts are opened to areas of sin and the need to grow in righteousness:

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:”
(John 16:8)

Isn’t it incredible that through the Holy Spirit we have been given the gift of being able to learn and understand God’s Word and apply it to our lives to makes changes for God’s glory?

The Holy Spirit Brings Scripture to Mind When We Need it

Have you ever been struggling in prayer about something, and suddenly you remember a verse that perfectly addresses your situation? That is the Holy Spirit at work!

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.  (John 14:26)

Not only does the Holy Spirit help us to understand Scripture, He brings it to mind at just the moment we need it. Praise God for His Spirit at work through the Word and in our daily lives!

Lord, thank you for sending Your Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Thank you for Your Word which instructs and convicts. What a blessing that we are able, through Your Spirit, to go through each day with Your precious Word in our hearts and minds! Please grow our trust in You, help us to understand Your will through Your Word, and strengthen us to walk in obedience.
Amen.
