All this month at Do Not Depart, we’re talking about uncommon gifts that were given that first Christmas: the wise men who gave their worship, Elizabeth who gave hospitality, Mary who gave up her identity (and then received a new one), and others.

Each of these people played an integral part of bringing the Savior into the world.

There’s one person I want to focus on today who gave an uncommon gift and was then blessed in return. This man was Jesus’ earthly father, Joseph.

In Matthew 1, we get a glimpse into the battle that waged in Joseph’s mind when he discovered his fiancé was pregnant.

Matthew 1:18-24:

“This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit….

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.”

Put yourself in Joseph’s shoes for a moment. What would you think if your fiancé told you she was pregnant? Would you believe she was a virgin? You’d probably feel betrayed, maybe foolish, and certainly broken-hearted.

This person Joseph loved cheated on him and gave herself to another. Nonetheless, Joseph still loved Mary and didn’t want her to face the wrath and judgment of those around her when they learned she was pregnant out of wedlock. That’s the dilemma Joseph faced when the angel visited him in his sleep and told him to move forward with the marriage.

What’s amazing to me is that Joseph immediately obeyed. As far as we know, he didn’t ask any more questions. He didn’t investigate further. He obeyed, even when it was hard and even when his obedience drastically changed the direction of his life.

There are a few lessons you and I can learn from this…

Life Lessons from Joseph:

Joseph obeyed immediately.

He didn’t ask a lot of questions. He didn’t put it off until a better time. He didn’t seek the advice of his friends. When he knew God wanted him to do something, he did it. Period.

Joseph didn’t have to understand everything to obey.

As far as we know, the angel didn’t give him a lot of information about this very odd event that took place in the womb of his fiancé. I’m sure Joseph had a lot of questions. Nonetheless, he obeyed without having to understand the specifics.

Joseph was blessed because of his obedience.

Because Joseph chose to obey God, God gave Joseph the privilege of raising Immanuel, God with Us! That’s an amazing privilege, isn’t it? And it’s all because Joseph gave the gift of obedience.

The other day at the Y, as I dropped my three-year-old son off at the nursery, I reminded him, “There are blessings when we obey. Don’t forget, Son.”

You see, at the front desk of the Y sits a candy bowl, and my son knows he only gets a piece of candy if he behaves while I exercise.

On this particular day, when I picked him up from class, his teachers were thrilled with his behavior, so he got two pieces of candy as we left.

There are blessings when we obey.

It’s true, isn’t it? It was true for Joseph, but it’s also true for us.

When Joseph gave the gift of obedience to God, God gave something even more wonderful back to Joseph. He gave Joseph the privilege of being the earthly father of the Savior of the world.

I can’t help but wonder what might happen if we choose to obey…

Is God your go-to place? – Psalm 27:5 {Memory verse}

December 15, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 4 Comments

Psalm-27-5

Psalm-27-5

When things get too hectic, where do you go? Do you have a special getaway place to de-stress?

David trusted God to be his go-to place. And so can we.

When we feel exposed to the bitter winds of life, God throws a blanket over us. When we’re turned around with nowhere to run, He takes us in as family into His own dwelling. He raises us up so high that we’re out of reach of our enemies. No wonder David wanted to stay in the Lord’s presence all the days of his life (Psalm 27:4).

Use these assurances from God when you need to unwind this week from a hectic Christmas season.

Whether you’re memorizing with us or just reading along, may you find rest in the God you see in Psalm 27; He’s the same God today.

“For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.”
Psalm 27:5

No voice like yours: An uncommon gift

December 11, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 25 Comments

Christmas-Caroler

Christmas-Caroler

The gift of “Voice” is not trending on this year’s Hottest Holiday Gifts list (well, unless you count My Friend Cayla, who uses speech-to-text software).

But consider this: Isn’t your voice one of the most sacred gifts you can offer?

Just ask Zechariah. When the angel Gabriel materialized in the temple, announcing that Zechariah and Elizabeth would have a child (at last!), Zechariah answered back with discouraging words. Luke 1:5-20

So for the next nine months, he was unable to speak at all. And how much he had to tell!

Not until the baby was born and Zechariah scribbled to his community, “His name is John,” was his tongue untied. Now his words were of praise to God and confidence in all God had done and was going to do. Luke 1:63-64

You can use your voice the same way this Christmas.

But you can’t wrap it inside a Christmas box and tie it with a bow.
So how can you give your voice?

  • Through your in-person conversations
  • Through your emails
  • Through your Christmas cards
  • Through your social media updates
  • Through your songs
  • Through your blog posts
  • Through your Facebook comments
  • Through your phone calls

Like Zechariah, use your voice to give hope to those needing deliverance, to assure others of God’s faithfulness, to relay how God has worked in your circumstances, to promise that God gives mercy, and to remind that He transforms the unrighteous into His righteousness. Luke 1:67-79

Your spiritual voiceprint is as unique as your physical fingerprint. You have an exclusive perspective, a different angle, another tongue to add to the celestial choir singing of God’s love.

No other voice can substitute for yours, nor yours for another.

God used His voice to call the universe into existence. He sent Christ into our world as the Word. Now He continues to send His love into the world through your voice and words.

So designate your voice to be a divine gift this Christmas.
Entrust it as a beloved present from God through you to others.

Consider the following questions for these last two weeks before Christmas.

Mary: The Gift of Identity

December 9, 2014 by Kathy Howard Leave a Comment

Mary Christmas

Mary ChristmasMary’s life was just what any young Jewish girl in the first century could hope for. She was secure in a strong community and a loving family. She was engaged to a good, righteous man who could provide well for their future together.

Mary knew who she was and what the days ahead had in store. She was “a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph” (Luke 1:27).

Then Gabriel showed up.

God’s plan to save mankind had been put into motion. When His eternal purposes crashed into the physical realm, everything changed for Mary.

God chose Mary to be the mother of the Savior, to be the vessel He would use to bring His Son into the world.

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

Mary submitted herself to God’s will.

“I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38).

Mary’s obedience changed her future. Her submission to God’s plan changed her. It even changed how the world would see her. Then and today.

Mary willingly laid down her own plans for God’s plans. She set aside her own dreams for the future for God’s purposes for eternity. In the process, she offered God the girl she was, and received the woman God created her to be.

Mary’s view of herself and her future was not bad. It was simply far less than what God had determined for her. She saw herself with human eyes, with limited, temporal vision. Then God opened her eyes to His vision.

How do you see yourself? Maybe your identity is based solely on human plans and purposes. When we give ourselves wholly to God, He will begin to grow and shape us into the women He created us to be. Women who can carry out His God-sized purposes for our lives.

Why would we settle for less? Why would we want to be someone less?

Sisters, Jesus came that we might have life and have it to the full. Let’s give our human-sized view of ourselves to God this Christmas and accept the fullness of everything He’s designed us to be.

In what ways do you still cling to your own identity? How can you offer that fully to God today?

Ask Him one thing – Psalm 27:4 {Memory verse}

December 8, 2014 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Psalm-27-4

Psalm-27-4

If there is one thing you ask most of the Lord, what is it? Is it just to be in His presence?

In writing Psalm 27, David’s one request was to remain with the Lord continuously. Do we ask the same? We will if we realize that in His presence there is beauty, light, courage, safety, and confidence.

Are you memorizing or meditating on Psalm 27 with us? This week we’re learning and pondering verse 4.

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.
Psalm 27:4

The Wise Men: A Gift of Worship

December 4, 2014 by Ali Shaw 1 Comment

The Wise Men: The Gift of Worship at www.donotdepart.com

It’s so important that our hearts be behind our actions.

I remember when my children were little and they would bicker. I’d tell them to apologize to one another, and mean it. I’m not sure if the “and mean it” part really helped, but I couldn’t stand to hear that begrudgingly offered “Sorry!” murmured only because they had to say it, not because it came from the heart. We would spend time discussing their heart-attitude and how much that meant to one another, and how much it meant to me as their momma.

Life is really all about the heart.

The Wise Men: The Gift of Worship at www.donotdepart.com

The wise men give us a good lesson that. In Matthew 2:1-12 we find the story of the Magi who watched the skies and noticed an unusual star. We aren’t sure how they knew this star meant the King of the Jews had been born, but they knew. And they followed it to King Herod. (I wonder if they thought a son had been born to him?) They were then pointed in the direction of Bethlehem.

And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.  ~ Matt 2:11

The gifts they offered were fit for royalty, yet given to baby born into poverty. Yes, they gave great gifts to this child they’d traveled so far to see. And, they gave Him their hearts. They worshiped.

And rather than head back to Herod and disclose the location of this perfect, God-in-human form baby , like he’d requested, they went home another way after being warned to do so in a dream.

What do the Magi teach us?

  • As they were hopeful of a newborn king, we can place our hope in the King of Kings.
  • As they were expectant, we can come to God in worship, being expectant that He will respond in love.
  • As they prepared for a journey, we should take time to prepare our hearts to worship and give praise to God.
  • As they were doers, we should worship God by our doing and by living our lives for Him.
  • As they sought Him at all costs, we should seek our Lord eagerly- with our whole hearts!
  • As they gave kingly gifts, we should give the Lord our very best gifts—our hearts!  (See Isa 29:13)

We can use their obedient, heartfelt worship to inspire us to do likewise.

Many scholars have various ideas on the meaning and symbolism behind the Wise Men’s gifts. But one thing upon which they agree is that in the very least, the gifts acted as a fund to help Mary and Joseph travel to Egypt to keep Jesus safe from being killed by Herod. And this of course fulfilled the prophecy, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (Matt 2:15)

Had the Magi not come to worship and bestow gifts upon Jesus, events may have been different. Instead, they gave sacrificially—their worship and treasure—and thereby secured protection of our Holy Savior. They followed their hearts and worshiped. In in their obedience, they became a crucial part of God’s plan.

And just like I’ve seen with my children, life is about the heart. Worship is about the heart!

Here’s a free printable of verses to help you give God the uncommon gift of heartfelt worship. Hang it somewhere you can read over the verses and meditate on them throughout the day.

Uncommon gifts: A December celebration

December 2, 2014 by Julie Leave a Comment

Uncommon Gifts Christmas

Do you know what gifts are trending this year? Some new gadget or toy, creation or product rises to the top in popularity each holiday season. Cabbage Patch dolls of the 80s, Tickle Me Elmo of the 90s, Ugg boots of 2000, and Turduckens (no one can agree on their year) have gone down in the holiday hall of fame as winners. But sometimes so many are sold that the novel items become, sadly, common. Once the market is flooded with a more-than-adequate supply, the too-typical gifts lose their value simply by virtue of how common they are.

The best gifts are uncommon. Gifts carved out sacrificially by one who felt the cost, but gladly gave anyway. Gifts crafted uniquely when inspired by love for the receiver, outweighing the love of self.

Uncommon gifts can’t be held back, for they long to be offered and love more to be received.

As the Do Not Depart team celebrates the birth of our Savior with you, we want to be known by our uncommon gifts. We’re taking this December to learn from those who gladly gave at the first coming of Christ to earth. This month, will you reflect with us on what makes our earthly offerings truly uncommon? #UncommonGifts

Happy Thanksgiving! {Psalm 118 Study Wrap-Up}

November 27, 2014 by Caroline Leave a Comment

Give Thanks {A Study on Psalm 118 at DoNotDepart.com this month}

Give Thanks {A Study on Psalm 118 at DoNotDepart.com this month}

Thank you for studying Psalm 118 with us this month!

We’ve remembered that we can always remain grateful because He is good, His love lasts, and He is our salvation.

  • Patti (and her son) reminded us that God loves us regardless and forever, with an abundance of forgiveness.
  • Kathy reminded us that God is our refuge, protector, and strength in times of trouble.
  • Lisa so powerfully shared that even with all the bruises on our souls, God still has purposes for each of us, and that means we can still share love.
  • Lindsey pinpointed one really good reason to give thanks (hint: it has to do with Christ).
  • Caroline shared that we can rejoice any day and here’s why.
  • Ali highlighted that our best response is to turn this gratitude into praise for His light.

As we stated in the introduction post this month and as Psalm 118 stated in verse 1, it bears repeating:

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” – Psalm 118:29

We pray you and your families praise and thank Him today, and that we all see His abundant love all around us, no matter what form your weekend takes.

And, we are thankful for you, our readers. Thank you for growing and learning with us!

Happy Thanksgiving!
