Words that succeed – Isaiah 55:11 {Memory verse}

March 31, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 (ESV)

Do you ever feel like nobody’s listening? Like what you’re saying will have no effect at all?

While we may feel that way at times, God doesn’t. He knows His words will be fruitful. His words are intentional and purposed. And successful.

We may not always see how, but we can trust that He sees. He makes it happen.

As we memorize and meditate on Isaiah 55:11 this week of March 31-April 6, let’s praise God for His power and design in where and how He places His words. And let’s allow His word to accomplish in our own hearts what He is purposing.

Tips for memorizing Isaiah 55:11

  • Read verse 11 several times in the morning and evening
  • Think about its meaning: what word? what does it accomplish? how is it sent?
  • Recite Isaiah 55:1-10 at stop lights, while cooking dinner, before you go to sleep
  • Ask God to prove His word fruitful in your own life
  • Look up definitions of accomplish, purpose, and succeed for greater insight
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Practice using first letters
    S s m w b t g o f m m; i s n r t m e, b i s a t w I p, a s s i t t f w I s i. (ESV)

He rains down – Isaiah 55:10 {Memory verse}

March 24, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
Isaiah 55:10 (ESV)

Spring is here, just in time for Isaiah 55:10 in our chapter memorization for the week of March 24-March 30.

After seeing the huge distance between God and us in Isaiah 55:8-9, God tells us here He bridges the gap! Just as He promised physical rain to come down, He kept His word in sending spiritual water by sending Jesus down.

Now we can buy without money (Isaiah 55:1), eat what is good, and delight ourselves in rich food (Isaiah 55:2).

As you meditate on Isaiah 55:10 this week, thank God for coming near and raining down on us. He nourishes, satisfies, and causes growth. And gives us seed to spread that good news to others. (Read more from Lindsey.)

Tips for memorizing Isaiah 55:10

  • Record yourself saying Isaiah 55:10 and listen to it during the week
  • Illustrate the verse using colored pencils or markers
  • Continue rehearsing Isaiah 55:1-9 at the beginning and end of each day
  • Concentrate on one phrase per session to really nail it
  • Read through the remainder of the chapter to keep the flow
  • Find someone to listen to you recite the verse
  • Pray for awareness and open hands to receive the rain from heaven
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Practice using first letters:

What we don’t know – Isaiah 55:9 {Memory verse}

March 17, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:9 (ESV)

The more intelligence we gather about our world, the more we know we don’t know.

The same is true for the gap between God’s ways and thoughts and our ways and thoughts. The more we learn about God, the more we know there’s much more to learn.

And the more we seek Him (Isaiah 55:6) because of His greatness, the more in awe we are of His compassion and mercy (Isaiah 55:7) to accept us as His own.

Look up at the daytime sky and the nighttime stars this week to thank God for His immeasurable power and grace to bridge the distance for us.

Be sure to read Julie’s post here for more thoughts on Isaiah 55:8-9.

To memorize Isaiah 55:9 this week, try these tips:

  • Print the words by computer or by hand in the version you want to memorize
  • Tape the verse to your bathroom mirror, your car dashboard, above your kitchen sink
  • Whenever you see it, repeat it several times until it begins to stick with no peeking
  • If you’re memorizing all of Isaiah 55, repeat Isaiah 55:1-8 to yourself first thing in the morning and last thing at night
  • Say the verse aloud to yourself; make up a tune to sing it
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Practice using first letters:
    F a t h a h t t e, s a m w h t y w a m t t y t.

Instead of running away . . .

March 13, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 11 Comments

seek-the-lord-isaiah-55

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 55:6-7 (ESV)

UH-OH
You’ve messed up again. Criticized your husband. Yelled at your kids. Spent too much time on-line.

Now what?

The last thing you want to do is return to face the people you sinned against—your spouse, your child, even yourself.

Our first reaction, the human one, is usually to run away when we’re in trouble. But what if for our spiritual welfare, we did the opposite?

TURN AROUND
When we read Isaiah 55, we see this pattern: We need; God provides. That’s the gospel. God is honored when we recognize we need help, and we go to Him for it. It’s what He invites us to do over and over: come.

So instead of running away, what if we first run to (Isaiah 55:6-7)?

When we seek God, when we call on Him, we’ll discover extraordinary gifts.

  • Through His Spirit, He’ll convict us of where we went wrong (John 16:8)
  • Through His Word, He’ll reveal truth so we believe better (Psalm 119:160)
  • Through His Love, He’ll cover us with forgiveness and mercy (Psalm 103:3-4)

Will we still face consequences for our wicked ways and unrighteous thoughts? More than likely! But even then, God will be near us with His grace and His guidance.

Then, humbled and reaffirmed, we can easier return back to those we’ve hurt. With our apology in hand, we can go to that spouse we fussed with. To that child we exploded on. And to ourselves we were unkind to.

FIRST REACTION
Returning to the Lord is the path to healing—not only in our relationship with Him, but in our relationships with others and with ourselves. It’s where we’re on the receiving end of compassion and pardon—seeing what it looks like, learning what it feels like.

Turning to God as our first reaction (Matthew 6:33) is the best thing we can do for ourselves and for others. The more we seek His forgiveness, the more compassion we’ll find.

Who doesn’t want more grace? Come to the Source and get it.

QUESTION
Do you have a go-to place where you “seek the Lord”? When has God surprised you by His grace? Please share.

He thinks differently – Isaiah 55:8 {Memory verse}

March 10, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

Last week we saw in Isaiah 55:7 that our ways can be wicked, our thoughts unrighteous. But God has compassion and He abundantly pardons.

Isaiah 55:8 confirms the difference this week: God thinks differently than we do; He acts differently than we do.

I’m glad He does! Aren’t you?

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
Isaiah 55:8 (ESV)

As we memorize Isaiah 55:8 this week, praise God often for thinking and acting so differently than us.

SUGGESTIONS for memorizing Isaiah 55:8:

  • Review Isaiah 55:1-7 upon awakening in the morning and before you go to sleep at night
  • Post Isaiah 55:8 in prominent places that you’ll see frequently
  • Repeat Isaiah 55:8 several times through the day; add it into your recitation as soon as you’re able
  • Ask God to reveal how His thoughts and ways differ from yours
  • By Thursday or Friday, find a family member or friend to listen to you recite all 8 verses
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Practice using first letters:
    8  F m t a n y t, n a y w m w, d t L.

Drink deeper – Isaiah 55

We believe this to be true about God.

So we invite you to join us here every Tuesday and Thursday in March to learn more about the Lord--and thus love the Lord more.

You already have the text we’ll be drinking deeply from–Isaiah 55 in the Old Testament of your Bible. It’s a chapter we’ve been memorizing one verse at a time since January 20.

But now we want to pause at the fountain to drink even deeper.

Drink Deeper {a study on Isaiah 55 at DoNotDepart.com}

Find a couple minutes this week to read all of Isaiah 55–it’s only 13 verses–to prepare yourself to learn and love the Lord more. Then return on Thursday to quench your thirst in the Lord’s compassion.

A sweet deal – Isaiah 55:7 {Memory verse}

March 3, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 3 Comments

Whether or not you’ve been memorizing Isaiah 55 with us already, join us for this week’s verse. It’s a great one to keep with you all week.

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 55:7 (ESV)

Isaiah is not saying, “You’ve messed up, so come home to get your whipping!”

Rather, he does say come back to the Lord so you can feel His compassion and can accept His forgiveness.

It’s a sweet trade-off: give up your foolish ways and be given the Lord’s mercy.

SUGGESTIONS for memorizing Isaiah 55:7:

  • As you’re waking up, review Isaiah 55:1-6 in your head (takes only one minute!)
  • Post Isaiah 55:7 around your house or work area and read it often
  • Try saying the verse aloud as soon as you’re able to whoever will listen
  • Meditate on what it means: what attitudes or behaviors do you need to give up? How does forgiveness feel?
  • Review frequently throughout the week
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • When you’re back in bed, review all 7 verses in your head
  • Practice using first letters:
    7  L t w f h w, a t u m h t; l h r t t L, t h m h c o h, a t o G, f h w a p. S t L w h m b f; c u h w h i n. (ESV)

Seek Him now–Isaiah 55:6 {Memory verse}

February 24, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.
Isaiah 55:6

Remember playing hide-and-seek as a child?

If you were the hider, once you found your spot, you’d sit quietly, passively, doing nothing. But when you were the seeker, you’d actively set out to uncover who you were looking for.

As you meditate on Isaiah 55:6 this week, see yourself as the seeker.

While the Lord is definitely not hiding from you—He’s near and can be found!—He will reward your active participation in calling out for Him.

Today is where He is; this is the moment He’s in. Seek Him now; call upon Him here.

Suggestions for memorizing Isaiah 55:6:

  • Look up “seek” and “call” in an English or Hebrew dictionary
  • Use a concordance to find other scriptures with “seek” and “call“
  • Display Isaiah 55:6 in several places around your house this week
  • When you wake up and before you go to sleep, recite Isaiah 55:6 to the Lord
  • Once a day recite Isaiah 55:1-5, working extra on verses that are difficult
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Actually do it–seek the Lord and call upon Him!
  • Practice using first letters:
    S t L w h m b f; c u h w h i n.

All are invited – Isaiah 55:5 {Memory verse}

February 17, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 3 Comments

Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.
Isaiah 55:5

The invitation has been issued: Come to me, God implores.

But the feast isn’t just for me and mine, or you and yours. It’s for all. And so Isaiah 55:1-3 leads us to 55:4-5 with a call to all the nations.

As you memorize Isaiah 55:5 this week, Feb 17-23, be mindful that Jesus has set a banquet table for all nations, and ask Him what role you can serve at the party to honor our Host.

Suggestions for memorizing Isaiah 55:5:

  • Begin and end each day with a review of Isaiah 55:1-4
  • Write out v5 by hand: circle, underline, color the words for meaning
  • Break v5 into 5 sections, focusing on 1 section a day
  • Ask someone to listen to you recite all 5 verses at the end of the week
  • Pray over the meaning of this verse; read commentaries for extras
  • Practice using Scripture Typer
  • Remind yourself often why you are memorizing scripture
  • Practice using first letters:
    B, y s c a n t y d n k, a a n t d n k y s r t y, b o t L y G, a o t H O o I, f h h g y.

When the mission field comes to you

February 13, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 18 Comments

when-the-nations-come-go

We’re talking this month about the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19-20). For some, that means traveling to the nations.

But what about when the nations come to you?

WHO ARE THE NATIONS?
Actually the word “nations” is translated from the Greek word ethnos, meaning: a race, a tribe, foreigners, Gentiles, heathens.

Was Jesus saying they were to tell others who were “not like them” about Him?

Doesn’t He also want us to tell others who are “not like us” about Him? Everyone needs to hear. Everyone needs to tell.

WHERE ARE THE NATIONS?
We don’t have to board a plane to find the nations. We’re with others not like us all the time. We work in the same offices; our kids go to the same schools; we show up at the same sporting events; we may even share the same pew on Sunday mornings.

Our skin color may or may not look different; we may or may not speak the same language; our socioeconomic status may or may not differ.

But if one of us knows Jesus and the other does not, that’s who we’re called to “go” to.

HOW DO I GO?
You’ll go differently in every relationship, but some similarities might include:

  • Go with food

Feed a family. How often do we eat only with our family or best friends? Can we occasionally invite someone different to the table? It’s a great place in every culture to hear others’ hearts and share our own.

  • Go with service

Step outside church walls and see the needs of your community. Volunteer at a non-profit; join a community book club; play on your company’s ball team. While our church families make great company, we’re called to be the light of the world, not just lights in the sanctuary (Matthew 5:14-16). God gets the glory when we reflect Him in the city.

  • Go with money

Give locally. When you can, help the poor among you. My city is blessed with a local ministry similar to World Vision. At Christmas we were able to give a hand-wrapped present face-to-face to the beautiful girl we sponsor when her family came to pick up the box of food that our sponsorship pays for each month.

  • Go with conversation

Talk to the regulars. Who do you see during your weekly routine that you still don’t know? Be intentional about learning names and interests. The grandmother beside you on the bleachers may be desperately lonely for the discussion you can bring. Relationships are built one conversation at a time. What begins with soccer schedules can end up with sharing Jesus.

  • Go with compassion

Educate yourself on cultures. Several Hispanic families speak no English at our local food pantry. With minimal effort, I learned the Spanish words for items they repeatedly ask for. Maybe you could reach neighborhood teens by learning what snacks they like or what movies they watch. Leaning into others’ interests is a great way to care and open avenues for deeper conversations.

BUT AM I QUALIFIED?
Whether God sends you to the nations or sends the nations to you, He’s equipped you to see them, talk to them, give to them. You don’t need an extroverted personality or a degree in Missions or one-way airfare to Africa.

You only need to give what Jesus has given to you:

  • company to the lonely
  • vision to the blind
  • hope to the hurting
  • bread to the hungry
  • grace to the guilty

Regardless of the nations around you— the depressed, the discriminated against, the broken, the confused—this is your mission field.

When the mission field comes to you, show up in it.
Shine the light of Christ on it.
Love like Jesus among it.

Who is in your mission field in this season?
How can you love them?

Please share in the comments.

Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

God made David a witness for His power. And later Jesus became the ultimate demonstrator of God’s power.

But what about you and me? How do we witness to God’s power? As we memorize this week, let’s think about sharing with others how we see God in our own lives.

Now, please link any posts from your own blog about scripture memory and/or any verses you’re memorizing. Share your struggles, your victories, your tips, your insights. We all learn from each other! Linky will remain active through March 31. Leave comments here.

We come to this – Isaiah 55:3 {Memory verse}

February 3, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

First, we listened. We heard His invitation to come, buy for free, eat, and enjoy (Isaiah 55:1-2).

Now, we see what we are coming to: God. And soul life. And His promise to love us forever (Isaiah 55:3).

Will you memorize with us this week (Feb 3-Feb 9)?

Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
Isaiah 55:3 (ESV)

Suggestions for memorizing Isaiah 55:3:

  • Begin each day reciting Isaiah 55:1-2 in your head or out loud
  • Pray to receive the message He intends you to hear this week
  • Read Isaiah 55:3. What is God asking you to do? What will you receive?

Don’t settle for less – Isaiah 55:2 {Memory verse}

January 27, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 7 Comments

I invite you to memorize with us this week (Jan 27-Feb 2)!

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.
Isaiah 55:2 (ESV)

Do you ever settle for less?
Is your schedule too full of urgent things that you miss out on the important things?
Have you given up on thinking you’ll get the good stuff, and are settling for inferior substitutes instead?

Remember that God desires only the best in our relationship with Him.

This week be encouraged from Isaiah 55:2 to use your resources to their best advantage to receive the riches God wants to give you.

It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
– C. S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

Suggestions to help you memorize:

  • Review Isaiah 55:1 when you wake up each morning.
  • Read Isaiah 55:2 several times. What should he be spending money on? Working for?
  • Meditate on how you want to spend your money, energy, and time this week.
  • Continue reviewing the new verse several times every day.
  • Try reciting Isaiah 55:1-2 together to a family member.
  • Read through the rest of Isaiah 55 several times during the week.
  • Practice typing Isaiah 55:1-2 using Scripture Typer.
  • Pray before you go to sleep to rest well for a productive new day tomorrow.
  • Practice using first letters:
    W d y s y m f t w i n b, a y l f t w d n s? L d t m, a e w i g, a d y i r f. (Isaiah 55:2 ESV)

This week’s memory verse – Isaiah 55:1

January 20, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 10 Comments

This week’s memory verse (Jan 20-Jan 26):

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Isaiah 55:1 (ESV)

Where do you go for water when you’re most thirsty? Most of us head to our refrigerator or kitchen sink.

But what about when you thirst spiritually? Where do you go?

As you meditate on and memorize Isaiah 55:1 this week, ask yourself if you’ve been seeking the correct source to satisfy your thirst, and if you’ve been overworking to receive what’s meant to be free.

Suggestions to help you memorize:

  • Recite the verse aloud several times, phrase by phrase.
  • Reflect on the word come. What does it mean to you?
  • Research the context of Isaiah 55, particularly verse 1. Look up cross-references.
  • Ask yourself: Who is to come? Where are they to go? What are they to do there?
  • Ask God how you can apply this verse to your life this week.
  • Take these words with you on a card or your phone. Review them in spare moments.
  • Type the verses on your laptop or phone app using Scripture Typer.
  • Practice with the first letters of each word:
    C, e w t, c t t w; a h w h n m, c, b a e! C, b w a m w m a w p.

His word has purpose – Sign up for it

January 13, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

Do you believe this?

So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11

We want to see this work.

And we invite you to join us!

We’ll be memorizing this verse (and twelve more in Isaiah 55) this winter. Focusing on one verse at a time, we’ll spend thirteen weeks meditating on foundational truths about who God is (provider, deliverer, wise, powerful,…) and what He promises us (presence, compassion, forgiveness, joy…).

Beginning January 20 and ending April 20, commit to spending time with Him through one verse per week.

Hiding-Isaiah-55-in-my-heart

When you’re tired of the old

or, HOW TO FIND FRESH GRACE

22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23

Holiday break is over. You’re back at work. Kids are back in school.

And your old problems are back as well.
Is 2014 looking suspiciously like a repeat of 2013?

dead-end

Where are those new mercies God promised to bring every morning?

Granted, “new mercies” is old news. “His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” was written by the prophet Jeremiah around 575 B.C. to a people heavy with sorrow at the destruction of Jerusalem (Lamentations 3:22-23).

In your own lifetime, maybe you’ve read that verse dozens of times. Maybe you’ve heard it so often that you tune it out now.

The old can become stale.
Until the hunger becomes fresh . . .

How can we receive God’s grace in new ways for our old situations?

1. ASK FOR IT
Begin by asking for fresh grace (Matthew 7:7). Search your heart to distinguish your needs, then lay your requests before the Lord. God delights in giving good gifts to His children and will honor your dependence upon Him.

2. PAY ATTENTION
Once you’ve asked, watch to see how God will answer. His response might not come packaged as you’d expect, so keep eyes and ears open to new ways He may be revealing His mercies to you. Anticipate the unexpected (Ephesians 3:20).

3. GIVE MERCY YOURSELF
Could you be jamming up God’s mercy by refusing to pass it along (Matthew 5:7)? If you’ve become too self-consumed, find another who could use your help. Don’t be surprised at how quickly God’s grace can flow through you to them, healing your own hurts in the process.

4. REFRAME YOUR STORY
If you’ve grown deaf to God’s grace in your life, seek out a fellow believer who can remind you of His goodness you may be overlooking (Proverbs 19:20). Listening to another’s perspective on your story can be enlightening.

5. BELIEVE DIFFERENTLY
Could your expectations be out of whack? Take time to realign your expectations with what God actually promises (Isaiah 41:10). Sometimes we need reminders of the deeper gifts. Believe differently and see if new mercies become uncovered.

6. WAIT. WAIT. WAIT.
In the end, remember it’s not up to you to earn your grace; it’s a gift God gives because of who He is, not because of what you do. Trust that He will be faithful; find rest in His steadfast love for you (Deuteronomy 7:9).

Even though you may still feel stuck with the same old problems, you’re never the same old you. Every day you’re being transformed more into the image of Your Creator (2 Corinthians 3:18). Every day is different from the last, and you’ve never experienced God in this day in this exact way before.

Receive His mercies as new in this day, in this moment.
It’s grace at its freshest.

Have you brought old problems into the new year? How have you seen fresh grace for them? Who helps you reframe your story?

Please share your thoughts in the comments.
