I showed up with her favorite lunch, which we shared while chatting at her bedside. She sat in her wheelchair while I perched where her roommate could keep a jealous eye on me. I asked about her bruising and her wrapped foot, her therapy and her progress. We talked and remembered and planned for a future drive to her childhood homeplace and an Autumn trip to the mountains. But inside, where I could not see, her illness was gaining ground.

Encouragement healing

Illness takes time to take hold, so it’s rarely defeated instantly. Often unseen, its progress lurks under a familiar smile, toss of the head, or sparkle in the eye, until the day of diagnosis. That’s the day when a disease declares its unwelcome presence, making it known that a battle is underway. And then we fight and hope and pray for healing to come. Just as physical or emotional illnesses progress over time, so too restoration often comes with the slow passage of days or weeks or years.

God is identified as the Healer: Jehovah Rapha. He may use wisdom He gives to man or the resources of earth transformed through technology, but no healing happens apart from Him. His plan includes conquering death physically and spiritually. When we or our loved ones suffer pain, we join in God’s grand plan by engaging in prayer for healing. Since our grief and concern may make it hard to know where to begin, use these words from scripture to call on the name of Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals.

ENCOURAGING verses for when you long for healing

  • “I am the LORD, your healer.” (from Exodus 15:26) ~ God, You have an actual NAME that means you are the healer. Would you intervene in the life of _______ to bring healing at the best time and in the best way?
  • “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you …” (Isaiah 43:2a) ~ Thank you, Jehovah Rapha, for staying with us in the most difficult times of life, even in the times when we are at our weakest, physically and emotionally.
  • “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.”(Proverbs 4:20-22) ~ Dear Lord who made __________, help us absorb your truths in our hearts and minds during this time of sickness. Use your words to bring energy, restoration, and healing to _________ emotionally and physically.
  • “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16) ~ Show us if there’s any sin eating away at us, and help us to uphold one another well.
  • “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) ~ Jehovah Rapha, we look forward to the day when there will be no more pain or disease leading to physical death. Would you comfort ____________? We want and need Your comfort!

Sometimes healing is reserved for heaven. We don’t always have the chance to see it with our earthly eyes, though we long for it on our timetable. Instead, some pain waits for fuller, more glorious, restoration.

Death is swallowed up in victory when healing finally comes.

Before I could drive my frail friend to her old Tennessee homeplace or make our trip to the mountains, she passed from this world to heaven. Illness was her means of escape, but complete healing awaited her in heaven. She is well. Very well.

Once we see – John 15:23-24 {Memory verse}

John-15-23-24_DoNotDepart

John-15-23-24_DoNotDepart

Even though Jesus personified Love, He wasn’t always loved in return. Not then, not now.

23  Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
24  If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. John 15:23-24

Once we’ve seen Him and His works, the choice to love or hate rests with us. Let’s choose wisely as we memorize and meditate on these words this week of September 15 – September 21.

Once you’ve seen, choose wisely. John 15:23-24 #MemoryVerse #HideHisWord

6 Love Notes from Scripture to Print and Share

September 11, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 12 Comments

6-Love-Notes_DoNotDepart

Where were you thirteen years ago on 9/11?

I was at Domino’s Pizza on a field trip with my daughters. As the children were making their own pizzas, we moms noticed the workers flocking to the kitchen, gathering around a small TV. They were in shock. Shortly we were, too.

And we all wanted to be with those we loved.

Remember the great displays of love and faith that followed, passing through families, our nation, and around the world?

Let’s not wait on a huge tragedy to prompt us to love. All of us need a little extra love on a daily basis to get through even the small bumps of life.

We’ve created 6 Love Notes from scripture for you to print and share with someone this week. Cut them out, sign your name, then pack one in a lunch bag, tuck in a sock drawer, mail in a card, click a pic to Instagram, or Facebook one to a friend.

Here are some suggestions on who to send them to and why.

  1. Someone who has forgiven you or who longs for your forgiveness
    1 Peter 4:8
  2. Someone who needs your support or who is supporting you through a hard season
    Proverbs 17:17
  3. Someone you need to thank for how they’ve loved you
    1 John 3:18
  4. Someone whose service to others needs a pat on the back
    Hebrews 10:24
  5. Someone you’re trying to love better and honor more
    Romans 12:10
  6. Someone who is working hard to love their enemies
    Matthew 5:44

Remember that YOU count as that “someone” as well. If you need to be reminded of that word from the Lord, put the love note in a place you can see often.

We learn about love in the scriptures so we can experience love in real life.

The more we believe and receive God’s love for ourselves, the more we can spread it to others. Ready . . . set . . . love!

12 Verses for God’s Comfort & Strength

September 9, 2014 by Kathy Howard 4 Comments

God's comfort and strength

God's comfort and strengthThe grief was raw. The crisis was fresh. I woke in the middle of the night, overwhelmed, feeling the weight of it pressing in.

Feeling on the verge of an anxiety attack, I began to pray. Then the Holy Spirit reminded me of Scriptures I had memorized. As I prayed them back to God, calm washed over me. Soon, I drifted back to sleep.

God’s timing is perfect. When that trial hit a few years ago, I was in the middle of writing a devotional book for “troubled times.” Because I had “hidden His Word” in my heart, it was there for God to use when I needed it most.

From beginning to end, the Bible assures us of God’s comforting presence and strength in times of trial and difficulty. The 12 verses below are some of my favorites. You can commit them to memory or print the pretty PDF version and keep it some place you’ll see it often.

  1. Deuteronomy 31:8 – God goes before and with us. We do not have to be afraid or discouraged because He will never leave or forsake us.
  2. Psalm 9:10 – God never forsakes those who seek Him.
  3. Psalm 46:1 – God is our refuge and strength.
  4. Psalm 73:25-26 – No matter what we lose in this life, we have God and He is all we need.
  5. Isaiah 40:31 – God renews the strength of those who hope in Him.
  6. Isaiah 43:2 – When we face difficulties, God goes with us.
  7. Jeremiah 32:17 – Nothing is too hard for our God.
  8. Matthew 11:28-30 – Jesus invites us to bring our burdens to Him.
  9. Romans 8:39 – Nothing can separate us from God’s love.
  10. Second Corinthians 4:7-9 The world may press us hard, but God’s strength and presence will not allow us to be crushed.
  11. First Peter 5:7 – God cares about us and every aspect of our lives.
  12. First John 4:4 – God is far greater than Satan.

Perhaps you’re going through a season of difficulty and trial. Or maybe someone who is close to you is struggling. These passages can be a balm to your soul. Plus, they’re merely a small sample of the amazing truths about God’s great love and care for us.

Share your favorites in the comments below or tell us how one of these verses has ministered to you. Rest in His loving embrace today!

Knowing Jesus matters – John 15:21-22 {Memory verse}

September 8, 2014 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

John-15-21-22_DoNotDepart

Knowing Jesus or not does make a difference–in ways we can understand and often in ways we can’t. And when we do know Him, we can rest assured we are in good company, regardless of what happens from those who do not know Him.

21  But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
22  If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
John 15:21-22

Whether you’re memorizing with us or just reading along each week, these are two verses to be praying over this week of September 8 – September 14.

Knowing Jesus makes a difference. Memorize John 15:21-22 with us this week. #HideHisWord

God’s Sweet Grace

Does anyone remember this children’s song?

 “He’s still working on me,
To make me who I need to be,
It took Him just a week to make the moon and stars,
The sun and planets and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be,
‘Cause He’s still working on me.”

That’s a simple, honest song about God’s sweet grace, isn’t it?

In its simplest definition, grace is defined as the undeserved favor of God.

Grace is that God is never finished working on us. It’s only by grace that He doesn’t wring His hands in despair and say in exasperation, “I just give up on this one! There’s way too much work involved here!” Grace is given when we stumble, fall, and fail. Grace is what we see when we look around us at all the rich beauty and deep love that God has given us, when we know we don’t deserve one single lick of it. And it’s by God’s grace that He sent His own Son to take the ultimate punishment for our sin, and to rise again to conquer it, assuring us forgiveness and a spot in Heaven if we believe in Him.

It’s very humbling to know that God loves us so much He’d want to bless us in our most undeserving state. And it’s freeing to know that even when we mess up, God loves us, forgives us, strengthens us, and blesses us.

God’s grace does numerous things for His children. First, when we see how sweet the grace of God is, and how marvelous He is as the giver, grace results in praise (Psa 40:5). Because we are favored and loved even when we don’t deserve it, grace encourages us to dust ourselves off and keep going when we fall or when life gets hard (Phil 3:14). That same grace draws us closer to God as we learn more about our sinfulness contrasted against His holy sovereignty, and prompts us to grow to look a little more like Him (2 Cor 3:18). And also, God’s grace frees us from the power of condemnation (including self-condemnation). (See Psa 19:12,13, and 1 John 3:19-24)

So, if you’re feeling especially blessed by God’s grace today, or feeling burdened and need to be reminded of God’s gentle graces, I have a little something for you. As Patti said in the introductory post this month,”We want to encourage you to abide in God’s Word every day, especially on your busy days. Especially on the days when you are struggling.” So, I’ve made a printable bookmark for you with a collection of verses about God’s grace. You can tuck it into your Bible. Each printable has two bookmarks, so share one with a friend, as you share the sweetness of God’s grace in your own life. Click here to download your bookmark about God’s Sweet Grace.

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Phil 1:2)

May we all be filled with the sweet knowledge of His grace as our loving Father patiently continues working on us.

Grace is undeserved favor. Grace is that God is never finished working on us.  #EncouragingWord

Bible Verses on Purity for Today’s Christian Woman

Bible Verses on Purity for Today's Christian Woman - Do Not Depart

All this month, we’ve been talking here at Do Not Depart about purity for today’s Christian woman.

Because as much as we’d like to believe purity isn’t an issue for Christian women today…that it’s only those who don’t follow Jesus who struggle with impurity, you and I both know that’s not the case. I’ve had several Christian friends admit to affairs. I’ve heard-over and over again-about Christian men and women struggling with pornography, lust, and inappropriate relationships. You don’t have to search too hard online to find examples of leaders in the church giving in to sexual temptations.

The stronghold of pornography is growing rapidly among women. And now, with graphic sexual books and movies like 50 Shades of Grey becoming popular even among believers, this is a real issue we need to think about. No one is immune to sexual temptation. NO ONE. Any of us, if caught in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong state of mind, could slip up.

God cares about your sexual purity. He cares A LOT.

I know that because of the  huge number of Bible verses about purity. (If fact, as I began preparing this post, I realized there was no way I could possibly list every single verse! Instead, I decided to stick primarily with the verses that addressed physical purity.)

Bible Verses on Purity for Today’s Christian Woman:

Exodus 20:14: “You shall not commit adultery.”

Proverbs 6:32: “He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.”

Matthew 5:28: “”But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Romans 6:12-13: “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 13: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God….The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.”

1 Corinthians 6:15-16: “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.'”

1 Corinthians 6:18: “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”

Galatians 5:19-21: “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Ephesians 5:3: “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.”

Colossians 3:5: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,  not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.  For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.”

Hebrews 13:4: “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

I want to share one final verse with you, because I believe it holds to key to overcoming sexual temptation:

Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

The key to overcoming sexual temptation isn’t in learning to control our bodies; it’s in learning to control our minds.

That’s why this verse is so important. If you learn to control your mind (or better yet, learn to allow God to control your mind), you will learn how to overcome temptation.

Are there any other verses you have found helpful as you try to live a holy life?

Ever wonder what the Bible has to say about purity? Here are a few verses on #ChristianPurity @DoNotDepart
