The Power of God’s Word to Battle Sin (Psalm 19:12-13)

July 29, 2015 by Patti Brown Leave a Comment

The Powere of God's Word to Battle Sin

The struggle with sin is the oldest struggle we humans face. Indeed all of our challenges find their root in sin. As we continue our journey through Psalm 19, David turns his attention toward the sins that beset our hearts.

Hidden Faults

Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Psalm 19:12

You have probably come across an unexpected photograph of yourself somewhere, especially in this age of Facebook. You log in and suddenly a picture pops up that makes you cringe. “I look like that?” you think in surprise.

Or perhaps it is a video. The voice that comes out of your mouth on the screen does not sound anything like the voice you hear in your head when you speak. You experience a disconnect. It seems that perhaps the person you imagine you are, and the person others know, aren’t quite one and the same.

Because we live in our own heads, it can be difficult for us to fully perceive ourselves. This reality affects not only our physical perceptions, but also our mental perceptions. Many of us have faults we are not even aware of. These are the hidden faults to which David refers.

It is often through our closest relationships that our hidden faults are revealed. Perhaps you have a tendency toward impatience, or maybe a complaining tone, and didn’t realize. Even hidden faults can trip us up, and they certainly impact those we love.

As painful as it is to have those hidden faults pointed out, it is a blessing to become aware of them.

David asks God to declare him innocent from hidden faults. Isn’t encouraging to think that as He brings each hidden fault to our attention, we can acknowledge our brokenness and be washed clean?

Presumptuous Sins

Yet it is presumptuous sins that are most alarming!

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
Psalm 19:13

What are presumptuous sins? Charles Spurgeon explained them thus:

“A sin that is committed willfully against manifest light and knowledge is a presumptuous sin.” – Charles Spurgeon, Sermon 135

We all sin…”for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23.) When we have become aware of our sin and we continue in it knowingly, we are willfully walking away from God. David acknowledges the power such sins can have when he asks God’s help in restraining him!

Some of the most obvious sins are those that are laid out for us in scripture, often referred to as acts of the sinful nature:

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. Galatians 5:19-21a

We are in a battle for our souls, and the battlefield lies within. Every single day we face choices that lead us toward God or away from God. Each of us has his or her own areas of weakness, and each of us needs to daily suit up for the battle!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Ephesians 6:10-18a

The reality is that we can not win this battle on our own. Like David we are compelled to plead, “let them not have dominion over me!”

We Need God’s Word as We Battle Against Sin

It is not accidental that these verses about sin follow directly after five verses about God’s word.

Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Psalm 19:11

More than anything else, it is through the word of God that we become aware of and our hearts become convicted of our sins.

And not only does God’s word convict, it also helps us fight our battle against sin. You may have noted that in the spiritual armor presented in Ephesians 6:10-18, the one offensive weapon is “the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

As Jesus demonstrated when Satan tempted Him in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11), scripture has great power to help us resist temptation.

Ultimately it is All About Jesus

The struggle against our sins will be a lifelong battle. We would be hopeless without Jesus Christ:

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
Romans 5:8-9

We won’t be free of sin this side of heaven, but instead of walking in sin, walking away from God, we can turn back to Him (the meaning of the word “repent.”) Because of Jesus’ great love, in Him we become in God’s eyes, as David prayed, “blameless, and innocent of great transgression.”

Marvelous Creator: The Gift of Water

The Gift of Water - a post in the Marvelous Creator Bible Study series at DoNotDepart.com

The Gift of Water - a post in the Marvelous Creator Bible Study series at DoNotDepart.com

It is summer and many of us are on the move – on vacation and in search of rest and a break from our daily lives.

Have you ever noticed that vacations are often planned near water? There is something about a body of water that draws us. Historically, people lived near water because survival depended on it. With modern water systems, we now tend more often to think of lakes, rivers and oceans as peaceful places to enjoy ourselves.

We couldn’t live without water. Humans can live for a surprisingly long time without food, but can’t survive much more than three or fours days without water.

While our earthly life depends on physical water, our eternal life depends on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who offers us living water.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (‭John‬ ‭7‬:‭37-38‬ ESV)

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (‭John‬ ‭4‬:‭13-14‬ ESV)

In water we find many poignant metaphors:

  • Water is powerful. Recent flooding in the United States is only the latest reminder of the great power of water. Water can remind us of the incomparable power of God.
  • Water gives life. In fact we define what is alive by its need for water. Jesus gives us eternal life!
  • Water cleanses. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross washed us clean from our sins.

If you find yourself near water on your vacation this summer, take some time to meditate on the gift of earthly water, and the precious spiritual gift of living water.

Bible study suggestions:

1) Read John 4:1-14. Ponder “living water.” What has been brought to life in you because of Jesus?

2) Read Ezekiel 36:25. What areas of your heart need to be opened to the cleansing power of the living water of Jesus Christ?

3) Read Isaiah 43:2. Consider the power of water and how God is even more powerful. His is the power that will see you through your hardest trials.

Bible Journaling with Children

June 19, 2015 by Patti Brown 2 Comments

Learn tips and practical how-to's of Bible Journaling with children at DoNotDepart.com

Bible Journaling with Children

There are many different ways you can help your children dig into God’s Word. One method we have enjoyed in our family is using bible journals.

Our method of bible journaling incorporates personal introspection, family discussion, memorization and even academic skills.

These are the sections we work on with each verse:

– reading comprehension
– dictation
– journaling
– discussion
– memorization

I have found that doing bible journal time first thing after breakfast is most effective. We all sit together around the table, and after prayer I read the verse for the day, sometimes adding extra verses for context.

Next I dictate the verse slowly, while the children write it in their journals. Dictation is an excellent exercise for developing listening skills as well as a rudimentary sense of grammar. At times I have used the King James Version to help the children become used to more difficult language. I believe this has been instrumental in preparing them to willingly read challenging works at young ages.

After the dictation portion of our bible time, we turn to silent writing time, when we each journal about what we think the verse means. I encourage the children to ask themselves hard questions, and to be honest when they are unsure.

When everyone has finished writing, we share what we have written and discuss the verse. This is the time when we take God’s Word and really apply it to the nitty gritty of daily life. It is a great opportunity to see how each of the children is growing in understanding, and also highlights areas we need to address further. Our discussions are sometimes very short, and sometimes last for a long time as we pull in other resources to answer questions, or have hearty theological debates.

Lastly we work on memorization. We have found over the years that repeating a verse ten times out loud really helps us get it fixed in our heads. Each verse almost becomes a mini song as we repeat it. After our repetitions we take turns going around in a circle, each saying the verse on our own without looking at the words.

I enjoy looking back at old bible journals. They are almost like diaries of our spiritual journeys. And I treasure those hours around the table with my children. As they steadily grow up and away into adulthood, I am more and more aware of what a precious time childhood is in a family. A strong foundation of love and God’s Word prepares them for the unknowns and challenges of adulthood in a way that little else can.

Why should you abide in God's Word? Scripture gives many reasons - join us at Do Not Depart to learn more. #WhyAbide

There are so many important and compelling reasons to spend time reading and studying the Bible. This month we have looked at just a few of the countless reasons to abide in God’s Word:

  • to seek truth and avoid being deceived by the enemy
  • to grow in our knowledge of and love for God
  • on the hard days, Scripture is the pathway to hope
  • when we abide in God’s Word, we grow in faith
  • the truths that we learn in the Word bring us peace

What other reasons are there? We also study scripture:

  • out of obedience (Proverbs 4:20-21)
  • for guidance (Psalm 119:105)
  • for instruction (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • to be His disciples (John 8:31)
  • to grow in discernment (Hebrews 4:12)
  • to grow in purity (Psalm 119:9-11)

Why do you study the Bible? We encourage you to take the time today, and every day, to seek the Lord in His Word!

Why Abide: Peace in the Storm

May 27, 2015 by Patti Brown 4 Comments

Peace in the Storm - Why We Abide in the Word

Peace in the Storm - Why We Abide in the Word

When the alarm on my phone blared loud, the teenagers were just finishing up the third meal in a long-anticipated marathon of movies and food. The last thing anyone expected was a tornado.

There were eight of us – seven teens plus me, their adult chaperone and meal manager. Our minds had been on the next movie, but now a tornado was heading right toward us and we had to figure out where to squeeze eight people.

There was no safe place with only interior walls that would fit all of us, so we had to separate. The five girls went into the walk-in pantry, the two boys into a coat closet, and I shoe-horned into a small closet of shelves that gave me just enough room to stand.

I have never been separated from my kids during a tornado warning. I knew my daughter would be anxious, and I wasn’t there to help calm her, to pray with her. So I started texting. For thirty minutes the three closets communicated via smart phone.

Peace in the Storm - Why We Abide in the Word

Abiding in His Word

To abide means to remain, and while you can not literally read God’s Word every moment of every day, every choice you make to fill your mind with scripture allows it to take hold deep within.

You can bring His Word into your day through reading, studying, memorizing, putting scriptures up around your house or listening to scripture-based music. Even just pondering a verse is filling your mind with truth.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

While we could have looked up scriptures on our phones while we were in those closets, the verses that came to mind were scriptures we had read many times, studied, and even memorized. A steady diet of God’s Word as our spiritual food had saturated our minds with truth.

Truth Brings Peace of Mind

So often our greatest fears are of the unknown. Deep peace comes when we speak truths that are known and eternal. Jesus said:

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. John 17:17

When we are anxious, when we don’t even know how to pray, we can pray God’s Word.

The peace of God is not circumstantial. You can literally be in the eye of the storm and know His peace. God’s peace is supernatural and beyond human comprehension.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Thankfully, the house we were in was not hit by a tornado. But the volume of rain was record-breaking, and the Central Texas area continues to be deeply affected by both tornadoes and flooding.

Peace Scriptures to Memorize

If you have not practiced the discipline of scripture memorization, I urge you to give it a try! You can join our Hide His Word facebook community for support and ideas for memorizing. Here are some scripture about peace to consider committing to memory:

– Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7-8

– I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

– Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

– In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

– For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10

– You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

– And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. Colossians 3:15

We continue to abide in God’s Word because we know that what we can truly count on is that which is eternal. The storms may come and go at any time, but His Word stands!

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8

Why Should You Abide in God’s Word?

May 5, 2015 by Patti Brown 3 Comments

Why should you abide in God's Word? Scripture gives many reasons - join us at Do Not Depart to learn more. #WhyAbide

Why should you abide in God's Word? Scripture gives many reasons - join us at Do Not Depart to learn more. #WhyAbide

Why should you abide in God’s Word? The Word of God is what we are all about here at Do Not Depart. But why?

Jesus tells us that abiding in His Word is evidence of our discipleship…

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 ESV (emphasis added)

And John writes that His Word can abide in us…

I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14 ESV (emphasis added)

But what does “abide” mean? Menó (μένω) is the Greek root word for the words translated as “abide” in both of the verses above. Menó means to remain, to stay. We abide by staying.

Can you really stay in God’s Word all day, every day? When you read and meditate on scriptures, when you memorize His Word, when you fill your ears and heart with praise, you indeed abide throughout your day.

Our ultimate goal in abiding in God’s Word is not to have a lot of words floating around in our heads! It is to grow in our love for and knowledge of  our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and learn how to walk in His ways. We aren’t called to abide in the Word so we can tick off a checklist of “ways to be righteous.” In His Word we seek His face and His will.

This month your Do Not Depart team will dig into scripture and contemplate a few of the many reasons God gives us to abide in His Word. We pray you will be encouraged to strengthen your commitment to abiding in His Word and keeping His Word abiding in you!

Join us at Do Not Depart as we explore why to read and study God’s Word #WhyAbide

Romans 8:1. Visit DoNotDepart.com for more shareable scripture graphics! #SpreadTheWord

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

– Colossians 3:12-17 (ESV)

Declare the Praises – 1 Peter 2:9

April 7, 2015 by Patti Brown 1 Comment

1 Peter 2:9

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he[a] lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
