The Lord Is in Your Daily Details {Memorizing Psalm 121:8}

February 20, 2017 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

Psalm-121-8

Psalm-121-8

While this is our last official week to memory Psalm 121 together, I pray that you will continue to dwell with God in these words for a long time to come.

This final verse is a fitting conclusion:

“The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.”
Psalm 121:8 (ESV)

The Lord is with us in our daily details, our goings out and comings in. He cares about our trips to the grocery store, He goes with us to our jobs, He settles us in when we arrive home at the end of the day.

He “keeps” (guards, attends to) us with Him at all times.

May this truth settle in your soul this week, that you are never alone, that you are always kept, always loved.

For more study, read here.

Thank you for journeying with us through this Psalm. How has the Lord shown Himself to you through Psalm 121 these past 6 weeks?

Your Life Is Kept {Memorizing Psalm 121:7}

February 13, 2017 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Psalm-121-7

Psalm-121-7

We have only two weeks left as we memorize Psalm 121. We hope your time with the Lord in this psalm, whether a little or a lot, has been meaningful.

This week let’s look closer at the verb and its object in the last half of Psalm 121:7.

“The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.”
Psalm 121:7 (ESV)

Here are four different translations:

  • ESV: He will keep your life.
  • NIV: He will watch over your life.
  • KJV: He shall preserve thy soul.
  • NKJV: He shall preserve your soul.

The verb keep (or watch or preserve) is from the Hebrew word shamar (H8104). This is its fifth use in Psalm 121 so far (it’ll be used again in Psalm 121:8). It means to keep, to hedge, guard, or protect.

The noun life (or soul) is from the Hebrew word nephesh (H5315), meaning that which breathes, vitality.

How does the Lord keep our life safe? Do dangers never befall us? No, we all have times of danger and falls. And eventually, physical death.

But at our deepest core, in the vital places of our soul, we are safe in the Lord’s care.

Regardless of what may happen in our circumstances or our bodies, the life of our spirit is protected because the Lord says so.

For more study, read here. “If the soul is kept, all is kept.”

By Day or By Night, No Strikes {Memorizing Psalm 121:6}

February 6, 2017 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

Psalm-121-6

Psalm-121-6

What does the author of Psalm 121 mean when he says this:

“The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.”
Psalm 121:6 (ESV)

Never be burned by the sun? Never freeze at night?

No. These natural occurrences happened to the psalmist. These happen to us, too. (Jacob would agree, Genesis 31:40.)

With poetry, we look beyond the literal. We go to deeper places.

As you memorize Psalm 121:6 this week, ask the Lord how to interpret these words in your own life.

How has God protected you already in 2017?

For more study, read here.

At Your Right Hand {Memorizing Psalm 121:5}

January 30, 2017 by Lisa Burgess 5 Comments

Psalm-121-5

Psalm-121-5

We’ll focus on memorizing only one verse this week, Psalm 121:5. Join us if you can!

The “right hand” is mentioned over 160 times in the Bible. What does it mean? The right hand signified strength and a place of authority (for example, Christ is at the “right hand” of God interceding for us, Romans 8:34).

The right hand was also the hand used for blessing other people. (Remember when Jacob crossed hands and blessed the younger child, Ephraim, with his right hand instead of the older child, Manasseh, Genesis 48:14).

“The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.”
Psalm 121:5 (ESV)

As we rest in verse 5 this week, let’s thank God for being our shade of both strength and blessing.

For more study, read here.

Who Is Guarding You? {Memorizing Psalm 121:3-4}

January 23, 2017 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Psalm-121-3-4

Psalm-121-3-4

In week 2 of memorizing Psalm 121, we’re introduced to our first two uses of “keep.” There will be six uses of “keep” before we’re finished. (“Keep” is also translated “watch” and “preserve” in other translations.)

“He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:3-4 (ESV)

“Keep” is from the Hebrew word, shamar. It means to hedge about, to guard, to protect.

Who do you want to protect you?

  • Someone strong.
  • Someone who cares.
  • Someone who is always alert.

The only One who can keep you perfectly is the Lord.

As you meditate on these scriptures this week, feel blessed and walk confidently because you are being guarded by the Lord Himself, both your personal steps (your foot) and as a community of God’s people (he who keeps Israel).

For more study, read here.

Get Your Help Here {Memorizing Psalm 121:1-2}

January 16, 2017 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

psalm-121-1-2

psalm-121-1-2

This week we begin memorizing Psalm 121. [Sign up now to receive resource links and weekly email reminders.] But even if you’re not memorizing, join us in reading along every Monday for six weeks.

We don’t know who wrote this Psalm, when, or on what occasion. But we can understand why:

To build confidence in the Lord’s care.

The psalm can be broken into four stanzas, with two verses in each stanza. This week we learn the first stanza.

Verse 1 asks a question; verse 2 answers it.
Who will help me? The Lord will.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1-2

The technical term for the poetic structure used here is a chiasm (pronounced ky′-az-um). Chiasms are repetitions of similar ideas in reverse order. You can find them throughout the Old Testament as they were widely used to add extra emphasis. (Read more about chiasms here.)

Here’s the chiasm in Psalm 121:1-2:

A – Creation (the hills)

B – My help come(s)

B’ – My help comes

A’ – Creation (heaven and earth)

Where will we look for help this week?

We often look to money, to our family, to a change in our situation, etc. And God can and often does work through those things.

But instead of looking at created things for help, let’s look directly to the source, to the Creator Himself.

These two verses are the only ones in this psalm to use pronouns in the first-person: “I” and “my.”

Let’s keep it personal this week, too. I look and you look. My help and your help will come from the Lord.

For more study, read here.

What kind of help do you need this week? Please leave a comment here or visit our Hide His Word Facebook group to continue the conversation.

It’s personal. From where will your help come? Memorizing #Psalm121. #HideHisWord

Survey Results on Memorizing Bible Verses

December 28, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

survey-results

We would all love to draw closer to the Lord in 2017, spend more time in prayer, be more active in helping others.

One path to successfully meeting our spiritual goals is to plant God’s truths deeper in our hearts through scripture memorization.

We asked. You responded.

We appreciate each one of you who filled out our survey on memorizing Bible verses this month.

According to the results, over a third of us have tried to memorize a chapter, but not finished. (Never tried: 15%. Memorized 1-2 chapters: 21%. Memorized 3 or more chapters: 26%).

What keeps us from successfully memorizing a chapter? Responses included:

  • I’m too tired
  • I don’t have enough accountability
  • I’m not disciplined enough
  • I don’t have a specific plan
  • I’m inconsistent with it
  • My memory is too bad
  • I’m too busy

We hear you.

For our next memory challenge—details and registration coming January 2!—we will be here with a schedule, a community, reminders, printables, and a suggested structure for us to learn the words together.

See more results from the survey in the infographic below. Again, thanks to all who participated.

Enough Grace for Today – Memorizing Matthew 6:33-34

May 23, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 1 Comment

matthew-6-33-34-esv

matthew-6-33-34-esv

Our time together in Matthew 6 is coming to an end. Thanks to all who participated, who prayed, who read Jesus’s words with us each week.

This final week of memorization concludes with an important and beautiful message from Jesus:

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 6:33-34 (ESV)

As we strive to put God’s will above all else, isn’t it good to know we can trust Him to take care of our needs? He promises to place alongside us every necessity to accomplish His purpose in our lives.

So today let’s thank Him for enough grace for this day. And let’s wait without anxiety to uncover tomorrow’s grace when tomorrow gets here.

One day at a time.

We pray you’ve been blessed through our months together in Matthew 6. May these words from the Word continue to resonate in you and through you in the months and years to come!

Trust God for today’s supply of grace. Memorize #Matthew6 v33-34 #HideHisWord

Share A Bird Photo as You Memorize Matthew 6:26-27

April 18, 2016 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Matthew-6-26-37

Attention Matthew 6 Memorizers:

This is the next-to-last week before our last scheduled one-week break. So spend time this week with Jesus’s words below and we’ll see you back to learn new words in two weeks! (Then only four weeks left.)

Now with this week’s verses . . .

Matthew-6-26-67

Look Up!

See any birds today?

We often fail to notice them as they fly by, minding their own business as we mind ours.

But Jesus used them as an important example of how to live without worries. God takes care of them regardless of their inabilities to do much for themselves.

How much more so will He do for us?

Bird Photo Challenge

Please take a photo of birds you see this week (or dig one off your phone from the past) and share with us on Instagram @DoNotDepart using the hashtag #Matthew6 and with our Hide His Word Facebook group.

If even the birds don’t look worried with all the obstacles facing them, we, too, can live freer of anxiety under God’s protective care.

Heart Choices – Memorizing Matthew 6:24-25

April 11, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

Matthew-6-24-25

Matthew-6-24-25

Jesus has been giving us many dichotomies in Matthew 6 so far:

  • do things for show OR for God in private (vs 1-18)
  • have treasures on earth OR treasures in heaven (vs 19-21)
  • see through healthy eyes and light OR bad eyes and darkness (vs 22-23)

In this week’s verses, He adds two more pairs:

  • be a slave to God OR to wealth (vs 24)
  • be anxious over food and clothing OR have peace about life

Inside Out Choices

We don’t often think of these as choices. I don’t think I’m consciously choosing to worry, for example, but I hear Jesus inviting me through these verses (and the ones that follow) to consider it deeper.

We all go through similar outward motions, but what is motivating us on the inside?

As we memorize this week, let’s ask God to reveal to us which master we are choosing to serve: our own needs for security and admiration and control, or God’s will for forgiveness and gratitude and righteousness?

Who will you serve today? We’re memorizing #Matthew6 v24-25 this week. #HideHisWord

Keep the Light Bright – Memorizing Matthew 6:22-23

April 4, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 3 Comments

Matthew-6-22-23

Matthew-6-22-23

Do you have perfect vision?

The past few years I’ve had to use reading glasses to see up close. Without them, I can barely read—unless the lighting is very good. With bright light my vision is clearer and I see more focused.

Jesus was telling his followers and us in Matthew 6:22-23 (our memory verses for this week) that light is critical to vision. With healthy views, we can see clearer and stay more focused.

As you meditate on these verses this week, look for light sources around you to remind you of the Light source within you. Keep Him shining brightly.

You Are Rich – Memorize Matthew 6:19-21 with Us

March 28, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 4 Comments

Matthew-6-19-21

Matthew-6-19-21

We are rich.

In one sense or another, we all have wealth. What do we count as our treasures?

As we read Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:19-21 this week, let us ponder:

  • What do I value the most?
  • What brings me the most satisfaction?
  • What would I most hate to lose?

Then may we reflect on if our treasures are mostly comforts in this life or are of value forever.

Jesus wasn’t opposed to pleasure now, but He was encouraging the highest pleasure found in God, both now and later.

We’ll continue to see this over the next three weeks as we memorize these six verses, Matthew 6:19-24, on “treasuring.” We hope you’ll stay with us.

Don’t be a righteous show-off – Memorizing Matthew 6:17-18

March 14, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 2 Comments

Matthew-6-17-18

Matthew-6-17-18

We all enjoy appreciation for a job well done. But as we mature, we want our motives to be deeper than a desire for temporary applause from the crowd.

In our memory verses this week (Matthew 6:17-18), we see again this same repetitive message from Jesus:

Don’t be a righteous show-off.

Instead of emphasizing to others how much we suffer, what if we showed them our joy instead? Even in our suffering. Because even as we fast, we are being rewarded, if not now, for sure later.

Jesus didn’t say to live a deprived life but rather an anointed life.

Are you fasting for Lent? Why? – Memorizing Matthew 6:16

March 7, 2016 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Matthew-6-16

Matthew-6-16

Are you fasting this Lenten season?

Have you told anybody about it?

It’s not wrong to tell.

But what Jesus was warning his disciples about in Matthew 6:16 (this week’s memory verse) was this: don’t make a show of it.

It’s good to question our motives behind any of the spiritual disciplines that we practice. Jesus encouraged it.

  • Are we giving so that others will praise us? (Matthew 6:2)
  • Are we praying in public so people will see us? (Matthew 6:5)
  • Are we fasting so men will notice? (Matthew 6:16)

If yes, then these disciplines are an end to themselves. Yes, we will receive praise, others will see, others will notice. These are powerful motivators that we are all lured by.

But is that really what we want?

As we memorize and meditate on Matthew 6:16 this week, may we ask ourselves:

Why am I doing this? Am I simply seeking admiration from other people?

Please share your thoughts in the comments.

From Falling to Forgiving – Memorizing Matthew 6:14-15

February 29, 2016 by Lisa Burgess 4 Comments

Matthew-6-14-15

Matthew-6-14-15

“Trespasses” here means literally “falling to one side” (Greek word paraptoma).

Has anyone fallen on you lately? And hurt your feelings or wounded your relationship? How hard or easy has it been to pull out from under it, and love the person anyway?

Or perhaps you’re struggling to forgive yourself for yet another fall of your own.

We all fall off our chosen paths quite frequently, yet God awaits us with open arms each time we return back to Him.

As we read and memorize Matthew 6:14-15 this week, may we each be helped to forgive others and ourselves more easily as we remember how the Father forgives us.

What follows falling? Forgiveness. Memorizing #Matthew6 v14-15 #HideHisWord

Are we in debt to God? – Memorizing Matthew 6:12-13

February 22, 2016 by Lisa Burgess Leave a Comment

Matthew-6-12-13

Matthew-6-12-13

Are we in debt to God?

And if so, how could we ever pay that debt?

As we continue memorizing the Lord’s Prayer this week (Matthew 6:12-13), we see Jesus teaching His disciples to ask God to forgive their debts. The Jews frequently called sins, “debts.” So most scholars also view “debts” here as sins.

On our own, we can never undo all the damage our sins create from our disobedience and selfishness and lack of love for God and others.

Since we can’t pay it back (although we can offer restitution to others when possible), we need to be forgiven for it.

We all need God’s forgiveness of our sins on a daily basis. Jesus said to ask for it.

As God releases what we owe because of Christ’s payment for it, it loosens us to also forgive others the moral obligations we could hold over them.

Let’s praise God for our freedom from debt this week as we dwell on Jesus’s words.

[Note: Where’s the rest of the Lord’s Prayer in the ESV? The familiar doxology “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” is omitted in more modern translations. Because these words aren’t found in the most ancient transcripts, many authorities now dismiss their authenticity and no longer include them. However, the words still ring true and are valuable to know and recite.]
