My teenage daughter and I recently discussed how blessed we are to have God’s Word.

Are you like me? We have several Bibles in our home, have access by computer and smartphone, and encounter Scripture graphics pinned on Pinterest and shared on Social Media.

After counting our blessings, my daughter said “…You know… it won’t always be that way.”

She knows that persecution will increase as end times draw near. We’ve studied Christian persecution of the Ancient Church and she’s seen recent news stories of horrific Christian persecution happening around the globe. She understands that following God doesn’t always mean the guarantee of an easy path.

I can’t say for sure if my daughter’s words will be fulfilled in the way she meant or even in her lifetime. But what I can say is that Patti’s words from the introductory post are spot on:

“God’s word is clear that we must expect persecution:

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.  (2 Timothy 3:12)

Paul didn’t say we might be persecuted. He said we will be persecuted.”

I’ve got to tell ya, I don’t feel qualified to write about persecution– I am no expert on the topic and know that in many ways, I live a “spoiled” Western life. But, what I want my children to understand, and what I must remind myself, is that no matter what happens to us in life, God is good and He does all things for our eternal good.

Persecution: 4 Things to Remember... Read more at DoNotDepart.com

We Must Stand Firm

Persecution exists because evil (and the evil one) exists. Though the world is dark, we are called to be a light that glorifies God. (1 Thes 5:5) Our light shouldn’t bend, dim, or bow to the beliefs and practices of the society around us. We must stand firm (Eph 6:13), honoring Christ with our body, mind, and spirit. We must live lives of obedience to His guiding, holy Word. And we are weak, we must lean into Jesus who can make us strong.

We Must Remember His Faithfulness

Focusing on God’s attributes bring encouragement. We must never forget that we serve a sovereign,  faithful God. (Lam 3:21-23) Images of Christians awaiting beheadings, news stories of American Christian business owners being sued for intolerance, and the like range from heartbreaking to disturbing. They can leave us with heavy hearts, wondering if God has forgotten His children. But, we are assured over and over again that God is faithful. He is not a “hands-off” Father. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121), He keeps His promises, and can always be trusted. What He says is true, and He works all thing for our eternal good.

We Must Remember We are Never Left Alone

Going hand in hand with God’s faithfulness is the promise that He will never leave us. (Deut 31:6) No matter how bad things get, Believers will never face one moment of persecution alone. Remember the story of Stephen? While being stoned to death, he looked into the heavens and saw Jesus standing on the right hand of the Father (Acts 7). It’s reassuring to know that Jesus loved Stephen and revealed Himself to him in his dying moments. We must remember that we too have God’s presence with us. The Holy Spirit is present in the heart of every Believer, every moment of every day. He will comfort, help (John 14:26), and strengthen us (Acts 1:8) when we need Him. We are safe in His hands.

We Must Remember to Have Hope

I don’t mean here the type of hope that is a just a “wish” that everything will turn out ok. I mean the true, deep, confident hope of who God isand of Heaven and eternal riches in the physical presence of Christ. We must remember that this life on earth is not the only life, and that God works all things for our eternal good. Christians are promised an everlasting life in Heaven spent with God. And the proof of this future is offered in the down payment of the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13-14) We can also have hope in the fact that He works things for our good (Rom 8:28), is pleased when we glorify Him, and that in the grand scheme of things, our side wins the final battle.

Though persecution will come, we must remember to press deep into the One who promises His faithful, loving presence and extends to us eternal life.

God will never fail us.

Persecution will come, but don’t lose heart! Here are four things to remember. #BlessedPersecuted

Back to School: Helping Kids Stay in the Word

Back to School: Helping Kids Stay in the Word

Back to School: Helping Kids Stay in the Word

The first week of September is upon us (already!) and that means that almost everyone is back at school. Whether you headed back a few weeks ago or have just started, shifting routine from summer vacation to school time can impact other areas of your life.

For a lot of people, when routines change, it is easy to lose track of regular time reading the bible. How can you help your children stay in the Word during the busy days of school?

The most important way is to be in the Word yourself, reader and mom Amy Bo wisely recommends. Modeling a love for scripture speaks much louder than your words. If you are struggling to find the time, consider joining an online ministry like Hello Mornings or Good Morning Girls, specifically designed to help you develop the habit of meeting with God first thing in the morning.

Here are some suggestions for ways to help your kids stay in the Word too:

  • Encourage older children to keep their bible next to their beds so they can read a few verses when they awaken
  • Play praise music as everyone is getting ready for the day.
  • Put a scripture-a-day calendar where everyone can see it – such as on the kitchen windowsill or bathroom counter.
  • Read a short morning devotional as a family during breakfast.
  • Tuck a scripture note in your child’s lunch (here is a really creative way to do it using a banana!)
  • When everyone gathers at home after a busy day, sit on the couch together with a yummy snack and take turns reading aloud from the bible
  • Set aside time for your children to tell you about their day. Ask them how you can be praying or them, and help them find scriptures that apply to their situation.
  • For screen time let your children watch a bible story video or play on the Bible App for Kids
  • Make bedtime fun with bible stories and lots of cuddles

How have you helped your children stay in God’s Word? Share in the comments!

When life gets busy, staying grounded in the Word of God will help you and your children stay focused on what really matters!

Blessed are the Persecuted

September 1, 2015 by Patti Brown 2 Comments

Blessed are the Persecuted

 Blessed are the Persecuted

Blessed are the persecuted. It is not an intuitive concept, is it?

In fact, we humans seem programmed for self-preservation; wired for the desire to stay safe and survive.

So when Jesus said, in the Sermon on the Mount…

Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!
– Luke 6:22

… I imagine the people must have looked at each other in confusion. How could they expect blessing when they were the objects of hate, exclusion, discrimination and injustice because of their belief?

Jesus’ next statement put it in perspective:

Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
– Luke 6:23

The blessing of persecution is an eternal blessing, not necessarily an earthly blessing (although God can use it that way too.) In the economy of God’s kingdom, persecution is not a debit, it is a credit.

We too find this a hard statement to accept, don’t we? On the one hand we might understand it on a spiritual level. But to embrace the actual possibility of persecution, to face the reality of what it would mean for our daily lives? That takes a faith that only God can give.

God’s Word is clear that we must expect persecution:

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
– 2 Timothy 3:12

Paul didn’t say we might be persecuted. He said we will be persecuted.

Are you persecuted for your faith? Persecution of Christians comes in many forms, and it is growing worldwide. Open Door Ministries estimates that on average 322 Christians per month are killed for their faith. This is a number that has been growing at a dramatic rate over the past few years, almost doubling each year.

Death is the ultimate form of persecution, and persecution occurs in many other ways at a much higher rate. From discrimination to physical violence, persecution is a reality for many many believers today.

Christians need to be prepared for persecution, and be supporting our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution.

This month our theme is “Blessed are the Persecuted,” in which we will explore scriptures that address persecution, and ask ourselves what we can do to care for those who suffer under it.

We hope you will join us.

God’s Word is clear that Christians must expect persecution. #BlessedPersecuted

Be Still: A Free Bible Study on Psalm 46:10

Is the fast pace of life wearing you down? Download our FREE bible study on Psalm 46:10 "Be Still" and let your heart and mind rest in God.

Doesn’t it seem like the standard answer to the question “How are you?” has changed in our culture? It used to be that the usual response to that question was, “I’m fine,” or “I’m doing well!” But now we all say “I’m busy!”

Busy-ness has become the norm. And busy people are distracted people. What better way to keep you from focusing on God and His Word than a long to-do list?

The fact is, our pace of life is a choice. And while there may be some things you cannot control in your day-to-day, you can choose to find a way to invite God’s holy stillness into your heart and mind daily.

“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
– Psalm 46:10

How can you obey God’s directive in Psalm 46:10 to be still when the world makes so many demands on you? We’d like to help you start.

Set aside some time to dig into Psalm 46:10 using our free printable bible study. Allow the Lord to grow you in internal rest and stillness, so that you can live in peace no matter how busy your life might be.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.

Pause, Breathe, and Remember {Free printable}

August 20, 2015 by Caroline 1 Comment

Revive and Renew verse printable

We have a variety of things occurring in our family’s lives (not to mention craziness in this world, too) that add quite a bit of stress to our daily living.

And I do a pretty good job of feeling overwhelmed and not at peace.

When I get into a pressured how-am-I-going-to-get-this-all-done? mode or a frantic how-do-I-solve-ALL-these-problems-RIGHT-NOW!? mode, what’s really happening is I’m just plain forgetting.

I’m forgetting that God is our rock and our rescue, no matter what our situations, and so I can trust Him with all situations.

“Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.” – Isaiah 26:4

I’m forgetting that I can always praise Him and see joy in Him as I take refuge in Him, no matter how overwhelmed and frantic I get.

“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.” – Psalm 5:11

It helps to stop, pause, breathe, and remember.

Then I can step forward.

Pause, Breathe, Remember, Step Forward

When I feel too busy and crowded and squeezed, I sometimes feel paralyzed in deciding what the next step should be.

Again, I’m forgetting. But, pause, breathe, remember.

Then I can see (again) that I just need to focus on His grace and His preservation. Grace for each step we take, salt for our words expressed.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.“ – Colossians 4:6

And — perhaps most importantly during times of stress — remember He has already shown us what is good. And He walks with us every step.

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8

Ways to Find Rest in a Busy Season – Free Printable

August 18, 2015 by Lindsey 2 Comments

Trying to find rest in a busy season? These tips can help! Plus, there's a free printable

Trying to find rest in a busy season? These tips can help! Plus, there's a free printable

I don’t know how to rest.

I know it seems a bit ridiculous, but it’s the truth. I’m a type-A, get things done, task-oriented person. Sitting still is hard for me.

So when I read verses like Matthew 11:28 or Psalm 23 or when I hear a sermon about Mary and Martha, the Lord often convicts me of my always-on-the-go attitude.

He reminds me it’s not always a good thing to get things done.

Sometimes, it’s better to do nothing than to do it all.

Sometimes, the one thing that’s necessary is to stop doing…and start being.

With the back-to-school season upon us, resting can be even more difficult than usual. Whether you homeschool your kiddos or send them to private or public school, there’s no doubt about it. Life gets more hectic when school is in session.

Here are a few tips that have helped me slow down in this busy season. (And hopefully, they’ll help you too!)

Ways to Find Rest in a Busy Season:

1. Pick one day a week to rest.

Follow the Lord’s example and rest from your work.

I have found that the best way to do this is to keep my phone and my computer out of reach. If I’m online, I’ll likely get sucked into work. But if my phone and computer are off, I’m a lot more likely to do what I set out to do: rest.

The emails will still be there when you return. So will the to-do lists.

Let them sit while you take care of what matters most.

2. Build small moments of rest into each day.

Take five minutes each morning to sit with your Creator. Allow him to recharge your batteries. Soak up his peace.

Five minutes isn’t a long time…but in the Lord’s hands, it can make a huge difference.

3. Use your vacation days.

So many people allow their vacation days to pass them by. They don’t take them because they feel like they can’t be away from work for that long…or because they don’t have the money to go anywhere…or because they don’t plan for it.

If your workplace provides vacation days, use them! You don’t have to actually go anywhere. You could use them and stay home.

4. Just say no!

Because sometimes, saying no to something good is saying yes to something greater.

5. Don’t think of rest as doing nothing.

Rest doesn’t have to mean you sit there and do nothing (although this can be very refreshing at times).

Rest can mean going on a walk with your family. It can mean digging into your favorite book. It can mean coffee with a friend. It can mean a movie with your husband. It can mean painting, writing, walking, music, or anything else that refreshes your spirit.

Rest might be harder to find in the busy seasons, but it’s not out of reach. Use these tips-and the free printable below-to help you find it.

Print it off and hang it on your fridge or wall. Stick it in your Bible. Leave it on your desk to see when you’re tempted to work instead of rest. Use it however you wish!
