So many of us – kids and adults, both – respond well to using music to memorize anything, from the alphabet to days of the week to Scripture.

We’ve talked about Seeds Family Worship multiple times on this site (click here to see all the posts that mention this wonderful group), and we’re happy to share that they have a new album out now!

8 Verses on Rest

September 18, 2014 by Caroline 2 Comments

Free downloadable image of Psalm 62:5 at DoNotDepart.com

I’m the type that always has a to-do list. My brother teases me that my dad and I are so similar – we’re never bored because there’s always something to do. Several benefits come from staying motivated to get things done, but a few stumbling blocks occur, too. One big downfall: it can be very hard to make myself rest.

Physical rest is actually easier than mental/emotional rest. But all rest is essential at times.

I forget that to rest means to restore.

We need to rest in order to rejuvenate and build back those pieces that have worn down, broken, become thin.

Rest is so important, God made it a part of our week from the beginning.

“So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” – Genesis 2:3

As usual, my busy brain forgets, and I need reminders. God knows that, and hundreds of reminders exist in His Word.

8 Bible Verses on Rest

Some of these verses speak on God’s gift of rest, and some remind us of the importance of taking rest.

Exodus 33:4 – “And he said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'”

Psalm 23:1-13 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you…”

Psalm 116:5-7 – “Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.”

Isaiah 30:15 – “For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, ‘In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.'”

Matthew 11:28-29 – “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Hebrews 4:10-11 – “…for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.”

Psalm 62:5 – “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (NIV)

10+ Resources for Purity in Today’s World

10+ Resources for Purity in Today's World {DoNotDepart.com} - books, websites, review sites, and articles

So far this month, we’ve been diving in to why purity is important and looking at biblical examples of purity.

We know remaining pure in various aspects of life and relationships rests on focusing our hearts on honoring God. And maintain (or regaining) a pure life centers on sharing God’s love more.

But how do we find reliable resources to help guide us in implementing the Bible’s truths into today’s culture? What about resources to help teach our kids?

The Bible is our first and best resource. (Stayed tuned for Lindsey’s post next week with a list of verses about purity.) Read below for a list of other great websites and books to assist you and your family in the steadfast challenge for sustaining purity.

10+ Resources for Purity in Today's World {DoNotDepart.com} - books, websites, review sites, and articles

Resources for Adults about Purity

  • Sheila Wray Gregoire at To Love, Honor, and Vacuum writes mainly to married couples about the married relationship and various forms of purity within it. All readers might not always agree with her opinions, but her posts get you thinking and starting discussions with your spouse.
  • [amazon_link id=”0800723139″ target=”_blank” ]Passion and Purity: Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ’s Control[/amazon_link] by Elisabeth Elliot (Revell, 1997, 2013)

  • [amazon_link id=”0736937773″ target=”_blank” ]12 Questions to Ask Before You Marry[/amazon_link] by Clayton and Charie King (Harvest House, 2011)
  • Focus on the Family has multiple marriage and parenting articles.
  • John Piper’s website, Desiring God, has many resources on purity.
  • The Gospel Coalition wrote about fleeing impurity.
  • If you’re unsure if you can ever turn back from a broken past, read this article at People of the Second Chance.
  • A Deeper Story has several thought-provoking articles on purity and relationships, including this one about purity extending beyond just sexual expression.

Resources for Families about Purity

  • We Are THAT Family is a phenomenal blog on sharing thoughts, perspectives, and tips for discussing purity with teens and kids. I love Kristen’s realistic and loving approach.
  • [amazon_link id=”1433684330″ target=”_blank” ]True Love Project: How the Gospel Defines Your Purity[/amazon_link] by Clayton and Charie King (B&H Kids, 2014) – Clayton King doesn’t mess around when discussing serious topics. He adds a dash of humor into his speeches and writing, but remains relevant and powerfully shares biblically-based truth. This new book of his is geared towards teens.
  • If you’re unsure about your child seeing a certain movie or reading a specific book, take a look at the media reviews at Crosswalk. While you might have differing standards as those expressed at times, the reviews can give you an open idea of what themes are discussed within a movie or book.

What are some of your favorite family resources for purity? Please share in the comments!

To Journey By Faith

July 31, 2014 by Caroline Leave a Comment

By Faith {a new series on Hebrews 11 at DoNotDepart.com}

A wrap-up of the "By Faith" series on Hebrews 11 {DoNotDepart.com}

This month, we’ve studied what it means to live by faith. Not perfectly. But, by faith.

  • We’ve read about Noah’s steadfast faith, and how we see what can happen when “we are sometimes asked by God to do things we can’t understand and that seem much too large for us.” (Read Ali’s post for a great list of lessons learned from Noah’s example.)
  • Kathy discussed Moses’s example of living by faith with an eternal focus.
  • Lisa’s post on Hebrews 11:29-30 shared how none of us (not in Hebrews 11 and not now) are meant to walk this journey of faith alone. We’re meant to journey together.
  • Julie shared how Rahab exemplifies that a common woman can live by uncommon faith and what that “uncommon faith” can look like.
  • Lindsey highlighted Joseph’s faith through trials. “Even while in slavery or in prison, Joseph believed in what he could not see. He believed in a God who would bring good from even the most terrible circumstances.”
  • Patti discussed Abraham’s faith and belief in God and His promises. “Even though Abraham rarely knew what was around the bend on the road of his life, he confidently walked forward at God’s command.”

Faith and Trust

Faith includes trust. Trust in God’s plan, His heart, and His purposes.

When Moses’s parents hid Moses for three months after his birth, they trusted in God’s provision even though the king’s edict called for death. Their faith exuded trust, and that trust eradicated fear (Hebrews 11:23).

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” – Hebrews 11:23

Moses’s parents and all those in Hebrews 11 are commended for their faith (Hebrews 11:39), and we have something in common with them:

We are still witnessing God’s promises come true, as they once did.

We are still given opportunities to live by faith each day, as they once did.

And, we are all part of God’s plan of redemption, completed in Christ (Hebrews 11:40).

What now?

Now, we run this race with perseverance and journey together, by faith.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” – Hebrews 12:1-2

What is one of your favorite biblical examples of living by faith? How about an example from your current environment?

All these people in Hebrews 11 are commended for living #ByFaith, and we have some commonalities:

By Faith {a new series on Hebrews 11}

July 8, 2014 by Caroline 3 Comments

By Faith {a new series on Hebrews 11 at DoNotDepart.com}

When I entered personal faith as a teen, the first verse I memorized was Hebrews 11:1:

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. “ (NIV)

Faith doesn’t mean we need to know it all or even see it all to believe. But faith brings understanding, even if that doesn’t include all-encompassing knowledge.

By Faith {a new series on Hebrews 11 at DoNotDepart.com}

This month, we will dive in to Hebrews 11 and discover what it means to live by faith. This chapter lists many people, many “ancients” (Hebrews 11:2), who lived by faith. Not perfectly. Not with all the answers. But by faith.

These people and their stories remind us that we will not likely find all the answers in our lifetimes. We won’t see around every turn. We won’t experience stumble-free paths.

But we can feel God’s presence, experience evidence of His hand, feel His love.

“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:3)

We will look at many of the people included in this chapter of faith: Joseph, Moses, Abraham, Rahab, and more. We’ll jump around in the verses a little bit, but it’s the people and their faith that matter.

It’s about these lives God planned to journey in faith (Hebrews 11:39-40), affecting our lives now, as members of His one body.

It’s about choosing faith and living by it because of His love.

Stay tuned, and be ready to dig in to these stories to witness how monumental living by faith can be.

What story in Hebrews 11 captures your attention when you read through?

Praising His Paths

July 3, 2014 by Caroline Leave a Comment

Psalm 16:11

Psalm 16:11

Wherever our journeys have taken us through this year, let us remember to praise Him this weekend for His paths, His righteousness, and His freely-given joy.

“You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” – Psalm 16:11

Holy Intimacy with God

June 19, 2014 by Caroline 1 Comment

How can we--imperfect humans--have any measure of God's holiness, His essential character? -- Holy Intimacy with God {DoNotDepart.com}

As a kid, I loved school. I loved learning, reading, and sometimes even studying. My family firmly believed that knowledge created opportunities as well as our own understanding of people and events around us.

While I still believe that now (and still love learning), I’ve also experienced how easy it is for me to get “stuck” on the knowledge part and sometimes forget about other aspects beyond knowledge.

The same goes for our knowledge of God. We already know we can only know so much about God (Isaiah 55:8-9). In the pursuit of more knowledge and facts, we may sometimes forget God openly offers us a relationship.

Pursuing God in ways beyond facts deepens our relationship. God created us to be with Him. Our pursuit of His ways draws us closer to Him as we see more of who He is.How can we--imperfect humans--have any measure of God's holiness, His essential character? -- Holy Intimacy with God {DoNotDepart.com}

Why Pursue Holiness

“For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:7

As Kathy stated in this month’s introduction, “God’s call to holiness is for our good and His glory.”

Following the knowledge we learn about how God wants us to live can foster a deeper and more intimate relationship with Him.

Holiness is what is most like God. The [amazon_link id=”0830814396″ target=”_blank” ]New Bible Dictionary[/amazon_link] says, “…holiness is his quintessential nature, his very selfhood” (p. 477, third edition).

If holiness is God’s character, how can we—imperfect humans—have any measure of holiness?

Here the New Bible Dictionary says, “…holiness is always derived and dependent upon proximity or relationship to the holy God. … He is a seeking God, whose holiness is expressed in his saving activity” (p. 477, third edition).

Because holiness is from God (including the gift of His Spirit), it also returns us to Him. Living from a holy perspective brings us back to the path God has laid out for us.

Hebrews 12:14 explains holiness is part of being with God (and peace is strongly linked): “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

How Holiness Fosters Relationship

It is through God’s holiness that we even have the path to Him through Christ (Romans 1:1-5). Christ’s blamelessness and sacrifice provides holy redemption for all believers. Within that redemption, though, we were also given access to God. Through prayer, through personal relationship, and through our adoption into God’s holiness.

Biblical analogies of parenthood always catch my attention (Psalm 103:13, Hebrews 12:10-11). When a child looks up to an adult, the child imitates that adult. Out of love, respect, and eagerness to grow to be alike in some way.

When we witness God’s vast love, we can’t help but want to emulate Him.

“…let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” – 2 Corinthians 7:1

And when we do, we experience His true peace, His blessing, and his cleanness.

“Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” – Psalm 24:3-5

We can only pursue holiness because of God, and when we do, we grow ever closer to our holy, loving God.

“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” – Psalm 29:2 (NIV)

What do you first think of when you hear the word “holiness?” How does accepting His gift of holiness and seeking to imitate Him bring you closer to Him?

Songs Revealing Beauty and Grace Out of Brokenness

April 17, 2014 by Caroline 3 Comments

Songs that Reveal Beauty and Grace in Brokenness {DoNotDepart.com}

I sometimes get lost in my brokenness.

I focus too deeply on my problems. Sit too long on my mistakes. Refuse grace-given love too frequently.

I’m broken and don’t deserve love, but that’s the point of grace.

Songs that Reveal Beauty and Grace in Brokenness {DoNotDepart.com}

Depths of Music

As much as I love words (and, like Ali, I really do), music (and dance) can express depths where words sometimes cannot breach.

When you think of brokenness and grace, you might think of the song “Amazing Grace”:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost,

But now am found.

Was blind but now I see.

John Newton, the author of this song, saw numerous trial and tribulations, many at his own doing. Even after a breakthrough moment for him during a literal storm, his faith grew gradually into a healed and powerful force.

The song “I Saw the Light” brings more, well, light to brokenness:

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

This song, originally by Hank Williams in 1948, has been covered numerous times. I love this version from David Crowder Band. As soon as I sing or hear this song, I remember that I’m not stuck in my past mistakes.

I sang those two to my children as babies when they cried and I was weary. Soothing balms to our souls.

I also replay “I Am New,” a contemporary song from Jason Gray, when I need yet another reminder:

Now I won’t deny
The worst you could say about me
But I’m not defined
By mistakes that I’ve made
Because God says of me

I am not who I was
I am being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy
And I’m dearly loved
I am new

Do you need to hear that again like I do?

We are not defined by our mistakes. We are chosen and holy and dearly loved. We are new.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Colossians 3:12

How These Songs Heal

These songs are just a few of those that both wreck my heart and fill it to overflowing with joy at the same time.

Sometimes a song draws my attention back to renewal when just a thought won’t. Sometimes a song (music and words together) reaches farther into our hearts than words alone. Music combines multiple modes of expression together. Mutliple ways to explore, learn, turn, remember, and praise.

As this article on the significance of the Psalms (and song) from Bible.org states: “The greatest calling of the church and of individual Christians is not to be evangelists or teachers or exhorters or comforters, but worshippers.” Song helps us do just that.

“My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.” – Psalm 108:1-3

Other Songs for Beauty in Brokenness

  • My husband and I are big fans of Switchfoot. Intelligent lyrics with a sincere faith foundation. Take a look at “The Shadow Proves the Sunshine” off the [amazon_link id=”B000CDG5AY” target=”_blank” ]Nothing is Sound album[/amazon_link].
  • Our family loves basically anything from [amazon_link id=”B001MIFVIK” target=”_blank” ]Seeds Family Worship[/amazon_link]. Every song verses as lyrics, accompanied by varied and interesting music (not at all hokey). I love the song using John 16:33 as lyrics.
  • If you need a song to bounce and sing to, try “Happy Day” from Tim Hughes.
  • If you like learning the history and affects of songs and hymns, take a look at the [amazon_link id=”078523182X” target=”_blank” ]Then Sings My Soul book series[/amazon_link] from Robert Morgan.

Sing praise with me. What are some of your favorite songs to remind you of His grace that covers brokenness?

Drinking Deeper Together – Isaiah 55 Study Recap

March 28, 2014 by Caroline 3 Comments

Drinking Deeper Together - Isaiah 55 Study Recap {DoNotDepart.com}

Lisa started this month sharing how “the more you know, the more you love.” And she’s right, especially when we talk about our God.

Now that we’ve studied Isaiah 55 together this month (and some have been memorizing), we can see an addition to that statement:

The more you trust, the more you love.

God bids us to come and drink, all of us who thirst (which is all of us) (Isaiah 55:1).

If we accept, that means we trust His providence.

God reminds us to listen (Isaiah 55:2).

If we listen, that means we trust His words.

God says “come to me” (Isaiah 55:3).

If we come, that means we trust His love.

God says seek Him (Isaiah 55:6).

If we seek, that means we trust His purposes.

All of this trust brings us closer to Him, so that our eyes see and our hearts understand more of His traits. That His thoughts are higher (Isaiah 55:8-9), His Word accomplishes (Isaiah 55:11), and His joy and peace are evident (Isaiah 55:12). All of those actions come from His love, the greatest love we can know.

May we praise and clap our gratitude to God for His amazing love.

This month:

  • Ali reminded us it’s always about love (Isaiah 55:1-3).
  • Patti shared how God calls all of us to run to Him (Isaiah 55:4-5).
  • Lisa noted that God leaves room for us all to turn back to Him and train to run to Him in the first place (Isaiah 55:6-7).
  • Julie mentioned that we don’t always have to understand to trust and accept His mercy (Isaiah 55:8-9).
  • Lindsey studied how God’s Word is meant to fill us to overflowing (Isaiah 55:10-11).
  • Kathy noticed the fruits of following God will become evident in praise-filled ways (Isaiah 55:12-13).

We’re praying today that we all may trust harder and lean to Him. How can we pray for you today? What did you takeaway from studying Isaiah 55?

(If you’re still memorizing with us, there’s just a couple of weeks left! You’ve got this!)

5 Ways to Support Missions

February 20, 2014 by Caroline 5 Comments

5 Ways to Support Missions {DoNotDepart.com}

I’ve wavered between a few different ideas for my post on this month’s theme of Show, Go, and Tell. That’s likely because we’re still figuring out how to best serve “missionally” in my family’s current stage and extra challenges.

It’s easy to feel like we’re not doing “enough” to help others. It’s easier to just stay in survival mode, rather than work hard for ways to thrive.

When you can only do a little, sometimes it feels like so little wouldn’t help at all, and so you stop.

But, we can all help, in little and big ways.

My friend (and writer here), Lisa, doesn’t know this, but she tweeted the perfect thought tonight to spur this post:

“It’s amazing how God can do so much if we’ll just show up with our little.” – @LisaNotes

Just show up.

If we can do something to help, let’s do it.

5 Ways to Support Missions {DoNotDepart.com}

5 Ways to Help Support Missions

If you’re in a season of staying or a season of fewer resources or otherwise, here are five ways to still spread God’s message of love:

  1. Pray. Of course. Pray for those serving afar. Pray for those serving nearby. Pray for you to serve as best you can in your family. Pray for open eyes to see new ways to serve.
  2. Give a gift that gives back to missions. A few years ago, my siblings and I agreed to stop giving each other gifts at Christmas and sometimes birthdays. We all have tight budgets, and we have all the physical goods we need. So instead of giving a physical thing, we’ve been either performing an act of service for each other or donating in one another’s name. For people you do purchase gifts for, you can choose fair trade companies that offer reliable work for people in need (and many offer a faith-based component, too) or donate proceeds to worthwhile causes. A few of my favorite companies/charities that share Christ’s love while providing basic needs include:
    • Compassion International (“Releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name”)
    • Sevenly (they work with a new charity each week)
    • Mercy House Kenya (supporting moms with young children)
    • Freeset (saving women from sex trade via reliable employment)
    • Love146 (working to end child trafficking)
    • Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan’s Purse (national and international relief)
    • To Write Love on Her Arms (presenting hope; read their powerful origin story)
    • Feed the Children (with both national and international efforts)
    • Claro Candles (each purchase donates to charities that fight injustices)
    • Restore International (fighting injustice)
  3. Support businesses and charities that have missionary components. See the list above for a few ideas. Donate outright (without making a purchase), if you want. Spread the word about a company or charity through social media, word-of-mouth, and more. Pick which one speaks to you the most and shares your God-given passions. As a family, raise money or goods for a mission in need. You can also shop through applications like Pure Charity or Amazon Smile so a percentage of your normal purchases go to charities of your choosing.
  4. Serve in your family. If you are a parent (or close to any of your family members), you impact lives. Those lives end up impacting multiple other lives, and so on. Serving and training your family absolutely spreads Christ’s love.
  5. Spread knowledge and awareness. Some people don’t help simply because they don’t know how to help or what needs exist. The more we share each other’s stories (and our own stories), the more we can all increase compassion towards others’ needs. Compassion leads to action.

If you missed it, Lisa shared ways to serve in your local community.

In supporting missions in these small (but lasting) ways, we can share Christ together, possibly in bigger ways than we could alone. Let’s shine however we can.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16

I couldn’t possibly list all the avenues in which we can support great companies, charities, and missions here. What are your favorite mission-based companies and charities? How do you support those missions? Share in the comments below.

When You Have to Come Down the Mountain

When You Have to Come Down the Mountain {thoughts on New Beginnings} - DoNotDepart.com

Disclosure: Do Not Depart sometimes uses affiliate links. See the bookstore page for full disclosure. Thank you for supporting this site!

I hear giggles. I step into the room and see smiles and beautiful play. My daughter has two of a similar toy and hands one to her brother, grinning as she says, “Your turn!” in her sweet, baby girl voice.

It’s beautiful. It’s peaceful and energetic at the same time.

I praise them for acting so kind and sharing so well.

And suddenly someone pushes someone else and someone screeches and we’re into a bickering moment (even though brief).

How quickly we came down that mountaintop with the peaceful view of calm hills.

The same thing happens in my own faith life.

I pray. I consult God first (what I always want to do, but so often forget to do). I act on that faith with love regardless.

But then, just as suddenly as a shove, I’m tumbling down that mountain. I grumble, I forget, I worry.

Why can’t I stay on the glorious mountaintop?

When You Have to Come Down the Mountain {thoughts on New Beginnings} - DoNotDepart.com

We Can’t Stay Yet

We want desperately to stay on the mountaintop. For me, personally, that’s part of what has fueled my insatiable perfectionism.

Ann Voskamp writes in [amazon_link id=”0310321913″ target=”_blank” ]One Thousand Gifts[/amazon_link] (Zondervan, 2010):

“Can I just go back to the moon and the brazen glory? Wind and trees and sky wake me and I’m Peter on the mountaintop, stirring to see The Glory in all its God-radiance, stammering out that it’s good to be here; let’s build shelters and never depart (Luke 9:28-36). But there’s always the descent from the mount.” – One Thousand Gifts, p. 124, emphasis mine

We’re not meant to stay on the mountaintop—yet.

We’re not flawless—yet.

We won’t be; not on this side of Christ returning.

But, we are on a journey. And that journey includes hilltops and valleys. Experiencing the highs and lows makes the highs so much more glorious. Seeing the dark (impossible to avoid) and the light reminds us the light shines so much brighter, and it shines regardless of how dark the dark is.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5

We’re on a journey. And every step of that journey is new.

A new beginning. A new chance. A new opportunity to choose right and good and love.

It might be a step forward. It might be a step the side. A step up the mountain, or a step down toward the valley. Or even a step back where we came from.

But, we keep moving. We keep journeying.

“We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.” – C.S. Lewis

We keep walking into each new day, new moment with a God who is present the whole time.

“Remember not the former things,
 nor consider the things of old.

Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

I will make a way in the wilderness
 and rivers in the desert.” – Isaiah 43:18-19

What new step are you taking in your journey today? If it’s been rough traveling for a while, how can you look at your next step with a fresh perspective of new beginnings? Share in the comments below!

Repeat the Joy

December 24, 2013 by Caroline 2 Comments

Repeat the Joy {DoNotDepart.com}

We have many favorite Christmas-themed picture books around here.

This is one of our favorites this year.

Repeat the Joy {DoNotDepart.com}

[amazon_link id=”0525422765″ target=”_blank” ]Listen to the Silent Night[/amazon_link] is gorgeously illustrated, focused on the journey to Bethlehem and the beginning of the Word become flesh (John 1:1-4). The steady rhythm the words take when read aloud help you feel the possible emotions of the night.

This is one of my personal favorite pages:

Repeat the Joy {DoNotDepart.com}

Look at that unabashed joy on the shepherd’s face.

Repeat the Joy {DoNotDepart.com}

The urgency of his posture. The importance of that job to spread this new of great joy.

It makes me almost think those shepherds immediately grabbed that good news and ran with it.

But reading Luke 2 reminds me otherwise.

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appear to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” – Luke 2:8-9, NIV

They were what? Terrified?!

Considering the awe-inspiring appearance angels might have had (not necessarily the “happy” simple faces on Christmas crafts), I might’ve been terrified, too.

The angel greeted the shepherds:

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’” – Luke 2:10-11, NIV

That’s pretty upfront. Do not be afraid. I bring good news. Here it is!

Did the angel stop there? Nope. Read on, and we see:

“This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” – Luke 2:12, NIV

The angel told the shepherds this good news outright, and he told the shepherds they would have visual confirmation!

Is this the only message the shepherds receive? Nope.

“Suddenly a great company of heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’” – Luke 2:13-14, NIV

Not only did the angel tell the shepherd the good news and say they’d have visual confirmation, but an entire host of angels appeared to sing praises of God and confirm this great news.

In just seven verses, we have one revelation and two big reminders of immeasurable joy.

The shepherds didn’t hear this good news just once. They heard it three times. Repeated joy.

So off the shepherds run (dashing with that excitement in the illustration above, I imagine) to Bethlehem to see for themselves. (They need another reminder!)

“When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to the Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.” – Luke 2:15-16, NIV

They see him! They actually see Christ the King, born in the humble, new, fresh form of a human baby. The beauty. The joy. Unimaginable, isn’t it?

And so they go, ready to the share the news as they’ve been commissioned to do.

Do they tell just one person? Speak this good news just once?

“When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them…The shepherds returned, glorying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” – Luke 2:17-18, 20

Who knows how many times these shepherds repeated themselves. But they did. They told many people, and then they returned, still praising, still repeating the joy.

We Need Reminders

We need truths repeated. “Do not be afraid” is one of the most repeated phrases in the Bible (Luke 1:30). The psalms repeat again and again to “rejoice” and to “trust” and that God’s love endures forever (Psalm 136).

We need reminders.

Sometimes I need reminders of the joy myself. Sometimes I need something repeated until I really get it, trust it, understand it. (And I’ve seen the same happen with others, whether it be about faith or about other things, like health or habits.)

Here are five Scriptures to remind yourself or share with others to repeat the joy and share good tidings this Christmas:

  • “The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works.” – Psalm 145:13b
  • “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” – John 14:27
  • “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14
  • “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5
  • “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

This list is not at all comprehensive. What verses would you add? How can you repeat the joy to yourself and others this Christmas?

Advent Activities and Christmas Crafts {Let the Children Come} - DoNotDepart.com

Kids and adults alike get excited about Christmastime. As families of faith, we want our children to know and focus on the reason for Christmas.

God’s Word is the best source to teach His truths. When we include other activities, we can also encourage community, invite exploration, reiterate knowledge, engage additional senses, and more.

Read on for several great resources for advent and Christmas, including several you can still jump in on with just a week until Christmas!

Advent Readings, Studies, and Activities

  • We love the Jesus Storybook Bible for anytime reading with your family. Erin at Home with the Boys has an advent reading plan that accompanies Jesus Storybook Bible with one story a night each day in December until Christmas. I particularly love how this Bible circles back around to Christ in every single story, including all the Old Testament retellings. It all points to Him!
    Jesus Storybook Bible
  • The Sparkle Box – Carisa at 1+1+1=1 shares their plan for using the Sparkle Box story and idea and blessing others this Christmas! Carisa also created some lovely Jesse Tree printables.
  • Last year, Kathy shared 10 meaningful family Christmas activities here on Do Not Depart.
  • Grapevine Studies provide family Bible studies focus on timeline and using stick figures to add a tactile component to learning and studying the Word. (I reviewed their studies here and here on my personal bog.) Be sure to check out their “Birth of Jesus” study! Because it’s a downloadable document, you could still get it this week and study a few lessons between now and Christmas! Click here to visit Grapevine Studies.
  • Last year, I shared several ways to share the Word through serving others, including Christmastime ideas.
  • Patti shared how her family throws a birthday party for Jesus at Christmas each year.
  • Becky at This Reading Mama created an awesome, free Nativity Pre-K/K printable packet with loads of activities incorporating early literacy and math skills.
  • Truth in the Tinsel is an advent program by Amanda White where kids create crafts to accompany studying a few verses within advent readings. It’s beautiful, simple, and engaging. Amanda offers many resources and blog posts at the Truth in the Tinsel website.

Christmas Crafts

While you’re reading the birth story aloud, you and your kids can also make these lovely Christmas crafts:

  • Here are two versions of an angel craft – one using handprints and another using coffee filters.
  • No Time for Flash Cards shows us a fun nativity shapes craft for a window display.
  • I recently shared about a resourced called “Winter Brick Activities and More!” on my personal blog. This downloadable resource from Educating Laytons gives several winter- and nativity-themed templates for brick creations, plus many other hands-on activity ideas. Many of the ideas shared can be completed with minimal preparation, which can be helpful during Christmas week when visiting family! Song of the Stars by Sally-Lloyd Jones
  • Maureen at Spell Outloud put together a useful list of activities to accompany Song of the Stars by Sally-Lloyd Jones (the same author as the Jesus Storybook Bible). (Maureen also posted a huge list of nativity resources here.)
  • While crafting and reading, listen to some Christ-focused Christmas carols and look for Jesus in them using this series we did, or read about their origins in this post from (in)courage,

How does your family prepare for advent and Christmas together? Share your activities and studies in the comments!
